Hubby and I decided to just 'be in the moment' for awhile yesterday. After our quiet time, we both were hungry, and since I couldn't make up my mind whether or not I wanted to cook (I guess I didn't want to), we went to bosa donuts. Big mistake. You won't believe what we did. We threw our diets to the wind. Yep, we did. We did not only buy a breakfast sandwich, but got a donut as well! Hubby loves apple fritters so he got one of those along with his sandwich and coffee, and I couldn't make up my mind so told the clerk to choose one for me. He gave me a vanilla filled chocolate covered one. Too rich and too sweet, but I have to admit.....I ate it all. Including the sandwich. I also asked for a matcha tea as I wasn't wanting coffee like hubby... but the matcha tea drink they gave me was awful. It wasn't tea at all, but a creamy matcha drink that was not for me. I went back and got a small coffee.
We kind of chilled when we got back and I decided to bake brownies after refilling the refrigerator with drinks. I made three batches because that was what was left in the box. Even put walnuts in them. Now what am I going to do with all those? For the time being until I can pass them out, I put in the refrigerator. I also got the remaining 1/3 of the box of peaches I had peeled and cut up, bagged, and put in the freezer.
I did cook dinner last night and after that, I headed over to Ms. Diane's. I had called her earlier and she said she had come home the day before. After dinner I grabbed a contained of cut up peaches and a few brownies and went over to visit Ms. Diane for a little bit. She is so funny at times. She wasn't as cranky as she usually is, but was hungry for peaches. I opened the small container I had taken over - and she ate over half of it! I cautioned her to not eat them all for I was afraid it would be too much for her tunny, so she left about 1/4 of what I had taken over. I put back in the refrigerator for her and told her if she wanted more, to let me know and I'll take some out of the freezer and bring over to her. I wanted to make a peach dessert, but the recipes I found called for milk or graham cracker crumbs, of which we had none. I haven't done any 'real' grocery shopping for some time.
And the thought that I had is now gone - I received a text earlier in the week. My children will possibly remember my former boss back in the 70's - Mr. Edward Knowles. This man took a young mother (who had just delivered her third child a few months earlier) who had been hired as a customer service rep, and saw something in her that changed her world. Mr. Knowles took me from being that rep and offered me the position of bookkeeper for this company. Bookkeeping was something I knew nothing about - but he took the time to teach me what I needed to know, and I worked directly with the CPA on learning how to do the books. Nothing was computerized back then (yes, I'm THAT old). Everything was in books. I learned to write payroll checks and pay the taxes. Eventually, as computers came in to existence - remember the huge discs that were used in these huge computers? Yeah - I learned how to be the computer operator too. And the credit manager. I did it all. And loved it. Anyway, Mr. Knowles left the company after about 4-5 years, I guess, and we had a new president. But Mr. Knowles and I kept in touch all these years. It came down to birthdays (June 2 for him) and Christmas, that we would send birthday and Christmas cards, always with a long note. I loved and respected this man for he gave me confidence in myself and in my abilities to learn something new. His birthday was a couple weeks ago and his son, whom I also worked with, sent me his dad's picture - he had made it to 100. But, within a few days, I received a text from Michael that they had put Mr. Knowles in hospice. I have waited for the news, and Michael just text'd me. He passed away Friday morning, June 14th. He gave me the information for the funeral, but I will be unable to go as it is in Florida. Mr. Knowles was a great man in my eyes, and in my heart. I'm grateful we kept in touch and in almost every letter I reminded him how much I appreciated him taking this young woman and teaching her how to have confidence in her abilities. I will miss him, even though I haven't seen him for nearly 50 years. We met in January 1975. That's how long I have known him. I made him a pistachio cake one year for his birthday because he loved pistachios. His wife came to our wedding and they gave us a beautiful vase, which I still have. He also gave me a shell rose that I have in a small vase by my bedside. It's the little things.
I immediately sent a note back to Michael after I received his text. He just responded.... "My sisters and I thank you so much. My Dad always remembered you and spoke of you with great affection." My heart is sad, but it is also full of joy for I knew this man.
And with that, I must get off and get ready for church.... I'm way behind schedule as my thoughts have been on Mr. K, as I affectionately called him.
Happy Father's Day to you dads out there. May your children bless you and honor you today.
Blessings!
