I met up with an 'old' friend today. One of my women's ministry leadership team leaders had set up the opportunity to get massages - and I got to visit with Tracy, a dear friend from North Hills Church. I hadn't seen nor talked to her for awhile. She does give great massages, by the way. Not only was I able to visit with friends from Stetson Hills Community Church, where we now attend, but also with friends from other churches.
Sitting here at home now, the phone rings - and it is another dear friend. We have not seen this friend probably in about 13 years I'm guessing, but we have always kept in touch. He recently retired and moved to Winter Haven, FL and wanted to give us their current information, address, telephone, email, etc. It was so good to hear from him and to catch up. He has always had a special place in our hearts. Gary is like a big ole' teddy bear. I believe he is 6'3" and the last time I saw him, I think about 300 pounds. But with the most gentle heart. He has been a great friend to Tom probably for 40 years or so.
Thinking of 'old' friends, I am reminded of one who was my best friend. Roberta, or Bertie as we called her, died a few years ago of MS, and I'm not sure what other complications she had but seems like cancer of the brain was one of them. I had known Bertie since I was pregnant with Stuart - and he will be 37 this year. As she lived in Michigan and I live in Arizona, I hadn't seen her in years. I regret so much I didn't do more to keep in touch. Not for her benefit as much for mine. Bertie walked many journeys with me over the years. She loved each of my children as if they were her own. And I loved her boys as mine too. I have memories of us doing silly things together. She stood by me and supported me with her prayers and love many, many times. One of her sons is still close, I believe, with a couple of my children.
Do you have an 'old' friend you haven't spoken to for awhile? Why don't you pick up the phone and give them a call, just to say hello? Or pick up a card and send that just says 'I'm thinking of you'. I'm missing my dear Bertie right now and wishing I had done that more often than I did. Don't wait until you wish you had.
Blessings!

I'm trying to, but you keep saying 'NO'!
A couple years ago I was in my quiet time praying intensely. Our finances were a bit on the tight side since Tom had decided to 'retire' and all we had to supplement my income was his social security. I had been praying for some time for God to bless us, to help us get through this tough time.
About the same time our associate chief medical officer (ACMO) took the chief medical officer (CMO) position - and wanted me to transfer to work for her. I didn't really want to leave my boss even though it would be a promotion for me. I enjoyed my job and the freedom it allowed me to volunteer and to do other things. I turned it down several times.
But this one morning as I was praying and asking God to bless our finances, I distinctly heard Him say, "I'm trying to, but you keep saying NO!"
That sat me back on my heels! Instantly the offered position came to mind, and I told God that if that was where He wanted me to go, then I would. The next day I went in and talked to my boss about it and she agreed - I needed to let God bless me. I went to the CMO and commented, 'Make me an offer I can't refuse." She literally got up out of her chair and danced!
Long story short, I did take the executive assistant position, working for the CMO and our CFO (chief financial officer). I have learned so much in this position. My co-worker, Jill, is so knowledgeable about the workings of an executive office and has taught me so many things. I will always be grateful to her for her friendship and patience with all my questions.
In thinking back on the time when I was praying and God spoke to me, I am wondering how many times have I (or we) asked for His intervention, His help, and we said 'no'. We didn't want to do that. And the blessing fell by the wayside. How many times have we asked for His wisdom to guide us - only for us to forge on ahead without weighing all the consequences.
How many times have we NOT stopped to ask God what we should do about a certain situation, how we should proceed, should we do it at all? Do we forge on ahead thinking that God is going to bless our efforts and we haven't even asked Him for help?
What in the world is wrong with us? We want everything 'our way' when God wants to give us abundantly more than we could ever ask for. What's holding you back from asking Him? Sin in your life? Confess it! Need to spend more time with God? Find the time! Long to hear His voice? LISTEN and WAIT.
It's not hard. God has made it very easy for us to talk with Him, to abide in Him, to walk with Him. How are you doing with all that? Take some time for God today. Tell Him how much you love Him, tell Him all about your troubles, tell Him you need His help. Then wait upon Him - before you make any changes, do anything different, wait. and listen for His voice.
Blessings!

The Practice of Prayer
This morning in my quiet time I reached for a familiar book that I hadn't read for awhile. It is a book of devotions by Andrew Murray. I searched for August 19th to see what it had. It really spoke to me, so I want to share it here. Hopefully, it will speak to you as well.
August 19th - The Practice of Prayer
Galatians 5:24 - Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
The best preparation for the spirit of prayer is thinking about our miserable fall and our glorious redemption. These things fill us with a dislike of our present earthly desires and create in us an honest longing after perfection. Prayer can only be taught by having a true sense of who we are and who we should be. Then we are filled with a continual longing for God, and can pray only for what is pleasing to God.
We should expect nothing from ourselves but in everything depend on God to enable us to nail the passions and desires of our sinful natures to His cross. When we see our inability to have goodness of our own, then our attitude becomes true trust in the work of God's Spirit.
It is strange that our highest privilege - fellowship with God in prayer - is sometimes a burden and a failure. Learn to expect nothing from ourselves. Expect everything from God. These two thoughts lie at the root of all true prayer.
May my thoughts, Lord, not be centered on me and my needs but on You and Your love. May my trials become blessings as they compel me to wait on You. Amen.
Blessings!

Anniversary getaway
Today, August 14th, we are celebrating our 29th anniversary. Wow, how did that happen. Some have said that 2nd marriages don't last that long. But ours has, and only by the grace of God. We both have not only grown older over the past 29 years, we have actually matured. God has been gracious to us that as our early marriage (and sometimes late) issues threatened to beat us up, we ran to Him to help us through those tough times. Because we chose to put Him first, we are still together, 29 years later. It hasn't always been 'pretty', and God has walked us through many difficult journeys.
We decided to take a few days off and get away so after working my birthday last week (Tuesday), I took the rest of the week off and we headed up to northern Arizona. North of Sedona there is a place called Forest Houses Resort (I think it is). We had rented a 'cabin' up there. It was really nice - it was two bedrooms, a sitting room, bath, full kitchen and living room. We had an outside area with patio chairs we could sit out and enjoy the coolness of the evening. Everything was furnished but our food. Each day we drove either to Flagstaff or into Sedona - or Oak Creek Village - to do a little walking and shopping. But coming back to 'home base' was always nice for a light meal, and reading a lot of books. I don't know how many Tom finished, but I finished three - (two I had already started).
Today was so nice - we drove over to Prescott Valley to attend church at Mountain Valley Church of God - and to love on dear friends there. We arrived just as the service started for it took a bit longer than we thought to get there. It was so fun to see everyone and to give and receive lots of hugs. It was so good to be worshipping again with those we love. We went to lunch with several of the couples from church and enjoyed catching up on what was going on. Afterwards we went to Pastor Don and Suzanne's home and visited. How I have missed the weekly visits we used to have!
We got home early evening and have unpacked already. I have to go back to work tomorrow so will be heading to bed before too long. It will be nice to get back into my routine of things. I'm sure I will have lots of things waiting on me at the office to complete.
Other than work, I know I do need to work on my walking stride - my OLDER brother has challenged my younger sister and I to a 13 mile walk in October when we go to Indiana. I bought new tennis shoes this weekend so that I can work on breaking them in. I will NOT let my OLDER brother get the best of me! I am so looking forward to us doing this challenge.
What are you looking forward to? What brings up fond memories for you? Are you merely surviving life and giving it your 'best shot' - or are you resting in the One who not only created you, but loves you beyond all measure? My thoughts are jumbled tonight - but I am grateful for God who loves me, helps me grow in Him, hears me when I call (although in spite of what some people think, He doesn't always answer the way I want Him to), and holds wide His arms when I'm hurting and running into them. Abba, sometimes I just need a hug from You... and You know who else needs Your hug... would You please give them one and assure them of Your love for them? Thank you, Abba.
Loving Him always....
Blessings!

Birthday!
Today is my 62nd birthday. Some people don't like to tell their age, but I have never minded. I feel I am blessed every day that I can count, for God has given me so much. He has given me a husband who loves me (although he usually drives me crazy :-) *I'm saying that with a smile on my face, honey! ), I have three wonderful children who, in their own way, show me they love me. I have 16 grandchildren whom I adore. I have family members I am close to, cousins who stay in contact, and many, many friends who bless me in many ways. God has truly blessed my life.
Today has been an interesting day. I had to work today and my bosses gave me a nice gift. Lots of people came by and wished me happy birthday. My siblings called and all but one of them sung to me. They make me smile. My phone kept 'beeping' because I was getting facebook notices of birthday greetings. My children all called - some numerous times for I was in meetings and couldn't answer the phone! My lil' sissy sent me a beautiful flower cake. I loved the comments, the notes, the well wishes. I received several cards in the mail. I am blessed with great friends.
So many people try to ignore their special day and I don't understand why. What a special day it was when God brought you to life. Why not celebrate it? Birthdays were always to be celebrated for me - but I must admit that from my 40th birthday on they have been so special. My daughter really surprised me big time for my 40th. She worked the night shift at 'my office' and I worked days. When I came in that morning, she had decorated my desk in black - with black crepe paper streamers hanging down, black everywhere - a walker in front of my desk with a paper 'Lordy Lordy Nova's 40' - how I laughed that day! I got black carnations, black cake, and so much more black stuff. It was the best! Then my 50th a couple friends and my hubby had people come over to celebrate - and then my 60th - wow - that was a total surprise put together by my daughter and Tom. I was not even suspecting anything - and walked into a room full of friends and family. What a night that was. And I want to keep celebrating. I did tell Mary I want to choose the photos for my 70th 'surprise birthday party'. :-)
I am truly blessed with family and friends who love me, grandchildren whom I adore. What about you? Celebrate every day that you have them near you. Time and distance quickly takes over, but now is the time for building those relationships that last. And most importantly, learn to forgive. Things happen throughout the years; don't let misunderstandings or anger destroy a relationship.
Hug your child today - let them know you value them. Send someone a note, or an email. Tell your siblings how much they mean to you (in a positive way!). Life is so short, treasure each day, build on each moment. Leave a legacy with your family, your friends. When God calls me home, I want my family, my friends, to know I loved them. I want them to know I love God and choose daily to surrender everything to Him. I want them to celebrate being alive. The alternative isn't so good - unless you get to be with Christ. :-)
Celebrate Life.

Finding Joy
I got to preach today at church. It has been awhile since I have had the opportunity to preach anywhere. I know that is what God has called me to - well, at least speak His Word. The opportunities have just not been there, but our pastor was still on vacation this morning so I was asked to speak. I spoke today on the difference between happiness and joy.
Happiness is when you go to Disneyland and have a great time. You are happy. But, when you leave, the happiness leaves too. Joy is different. Joy is not dependent upon the people in your life or the possessions you accumulate, or what's happening at this point in your life. If you are going to learn to be joyful, you must learn to be joyful in the situation, in the very problems and experiences of life.
It is interesting how this very sermon got played out with Tom and I this morning. He wanted to wear one of his Hawaiian shirts to church. That was fine, but the one he chose really needed to be ironed. As he walked away, he mumbled under his breath something about the shirt will never get ironed. Now, I had a choice to make. I could respond back about my busy schedule with just work alone, not counting other things that I do. Or I could remain silent. I chose to remain silent. Then, he was wanting to get to church early this morning - and I wasn't ready. He very kindly asked if I was going to be ready to go when he was. I didn't think I could be without rushing, so I just suggested he drive, and when I was ready, I would drive as well. It worked out perfectly for it took me at least another half hour.(can't rush beauty) Again, I could have rushed to get ready to ride with him, be irritated with him for making me rush, and we would have probably snap at each other all the way to church. (is that what happens at your house?)
But God had been working on me while preparing this sermon. And, you know what, it was a nice peaceful morning and I arrived at church in plenty of time, unhurried, calm and ready to share God's Word. What a difference it makes when I listen to God.
What about you? Did you have joy this morning - or were you rushing about trying to get somewhere on time, arriving irritated and grumpy. Do you wish you could rewind today and start over, letting go of the things that really don't matter?
Make a decision today. Do you want to sweat the small stuff and be joyless - or let the small stuff slide by and retain your joy? Think about it.
Blessings!

My 4th Annual Lunch Party
Last Friday I had my 4th Annual Lunch Party at work. When I sent out the invites, I ask them to bring a dish to share and stated that this is a time to get to know your co-workers, to find out what is going on in their lives - things that we are too busy at work to discuss. For a short time, it is come and go - grab something to eat, visit a bit, then go on your way.
I wanted to be sure that we had plenty of food so I made a huge roaster pan full of taco soup, 2 dozen deviled eggs, a huge container of Greek salad, 2 trays of banana pudding and salsa. I was ready to feed a bunch of people. Not because I had to to do this - but because I wanted to - wanted people to find out who people really are. I wanted it to be a fun time, a break from work and rushing through lunch.
I had the room all set, the food out. One person brings in a bowl of pasta salad (very good, btw). Earlier another person had given me two bags of tortilla chips to go with my salsa - that they had asked for me to make. I waited. It was all ready.
Finally, a couple people came in. We never had more than 5 people in the room at one time, I don't think. As the time I had allotted for this 'lunch party' was coming to a close, I invited men who were in our building doing some moving of furniture for us. They were so appreciative.
As I sat at the table and watched the 6 or 7 men come in to get something to eat, I was reminded of Matthew 22. Jesus tells the story of the rich man who prepared a wedding feast, but when those who were invited refused to come, he brought in others from the street. As I thought about the parable, I realized that although I had invited over 60 people to come to my lunch party, and 95% of the people accepted, only 8 came who I had invited. The rest that came were those that others had invited to come, knowing I had all this food and no one to eat it. One friend who came told me that someone had commented to her that I needed to invite those who would come - meaning leave the management out and invite the co-workers - they are the ones who would appreciate the luncheon.
Isn't that what we do sometimes? Jesus invites us to sit and feast with Him in His Word, but we find other things to busy ourselves with and don't take the time. He opens opportunities for us to be used for His Glory - only we want to just go chill in front of the TV. He nudges us to call someone, and we go shopping instead. We accept the invitation to His luncheon, but we busy ourselves with other things when the time comes.
Jesus is giving you an invitation - to spend time with Him, to be used by Him. You accepted the invitation to ask Jesus into your heart. What are you doing with His invitation now?
Blessings!
