No Plan B

Have you ever been so confident in something - or Someone - that you did not come up with a Plan B?  That's where I am right now.  No Plan B.

What does that mean?  What is Plan A?  Well, let me explain.  When you know Someone (or some thing) is your only source of help and hope, no other options to fall back on if they don't come through, well, that is Plan A.    Nothing else is planned if whatever it is doesn't come through.  No Plan B.

God talks about it in Isaiah 44:14-20 - "He cuts down cedars for himself, and takes the cypress and the oak; he secures it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it. Then it shall be for a man to burn, for he will take some of it and warm himself; yes, he kindles it and bakes bread; indeed he makes a god and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it. He burns half of it in the fire; with this half he eats meat; he roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He even warms himself and says, "Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire." And the rest of it he makes into a god, his carved image. He falls down before it and worships it, prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god!" They do not know nor understand; for He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. And  no one considers in his heart, nor is there knowledge or  understanding to say, "I have burned half of it in the fire, yes, I have also baked bread on its coals; I have roasted meat and eaten it; and shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?" He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has turned him aside; and he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, "Is there not a lie in my right hand?"

Even in our world today we have false gods.  A god is defined as this:  anything to which we ascribe the power to deliver us.  Let me give you a few examples....

Money
Credit Cards/Consolidation Loans
Drugs/Alcohol
Sex
Pleasure/Entertainment/Recreation/Sports
Friends (to deliver us from loneliness)
Counselors
Lawsuits
etc.

Many times we turn to one of the above examples to take care of us.  Even television commercials try to get you to buy into dependence upon these powers.

But what if you decided you were going to put it all in Plan A - which is dependence upon the One True God?  Something happens in your spirit when you look at some of the above sources of 'deliverance' and say "NO! God, You alone are my Deliverer!!"    God-worshipers are those who come to God first in their time of need.  They seek God's face and wait on Him to receive directives for the course to take.  They seek His powerful intervention and cry out to Him for wisdom and revelation.

What would it take to get you to the point where you say to the Lord, "You only are my Helper. If you don't save me, I am not saved. If you don't heal me, I am not healed. If you don't deliver  me, I am not delivered. I have no other recourse, no Plan B, no alternative plan. I am not entertaining other options. It's You and You alone. I worship You. You are my God!!"

And that is where I am.  I am completely dependent upon God to help me find a job.  Yes, I need to do my part in applying, but I am dependent upon Him to take me where He wants me to be.  I don't have a Plan B if He does not meet my needs.

Scary?  Sure it is!   But that is if you think you can do it all on your own.  My confidence and dependence is upon God.  If He doesn't give me a job, then I will not have one.  Sometimes God doesn't give us what we seek because He wants us to be totally dependent upon Him.  He wants us to stand in faith until He intervenes.  If that happens, fasten your seatbelt, for you are in for the ride of your life! This is where we find miracles by God's hand.

I began seeking only Plan A when my daughter had leukemia.  I came to understand what having a Plan A only meant.  I sought God with all I had; trusting Him only.  And He answered and brought healing to my daughter.  Why wouldn't I trust Him to find me a job?  He has proven Himself time and again.

What about you?  Do you reach out to other things and other people to make you feel better; to get your advice?   Try putting God first - and tell Him He is your Plan A and you don't have a Plan B.  Press into Him and ask for His favor.  He's waiting for you to trust Him with everything.  Just do it.

Blessings!

I did write yesterday...however....

I chose not to post it.  I couldn't delete it for I spent nearly two hours completing it.  I instead saved it in my drafts.  I don't know why, other than I had spent so much thought and time in it.  Why didn't I post it?  I had my reasons.

Yesterday would have been my mama's 94th birthday.  She died in 2004.  As I thought about my mama, I thought of my other siblings that have passed away.  By the time I was finished with what I had written, I had many memories and thoughts put in it.  Decided not to share for memories affect people differently.  Some would think fondly of the past memories, some choose to drink away their sorrow (like that helps).  I didn't want to be a contributor to the latter.

Anyway, back on track (or as my daughter in law says - SQUIRREL!!), yesterday was a memory day for me.  My little sissy called and we, as we have for the past 8 years on mama's birthday, sang happy birthday to mama.  We "pinky swore" 8 years ago that every year on mama's birthday we would sing happy birthday to her.  Tradition now.

Speaking of memories, I quickly went through my hope chest (remember those?) to check on some things and found a green pop warner jacket that had belonged to my youngest son.  I believe his boys are big enough for it now so left it out for them.  I found, still, some of the clothes I had saved of my daughter's - school papers from all three children, photos, and many things.  Some day I really ought to clean it out.  If I took out all the memories in my hope chest, I don't know how much would be left.

I did find an envelope that I didn't remember having in there.  Talk about memories!  I am assuming I received this envelope with things I received after mama passed away.  The first thing I have pulled out is a letter addressed to my daddy (my REAL daddy) from his brother.   It's dated May 12, but not the year.  However, it is on American Red Cross stationary and Uncle Carl talks about being in New Guinea.  My daddy died in 1957 so I'm guessing this is in the 1950's anyway.  There is a baby card in an envelope that I just realized belongs to my brother; the postmark date is July 25, 1945.  I need to forward that to him.  What a surprise it would be!

I have a telegram from Uncle Carl that is dated December 6, 1942 addressed to my parents telling them Merry Christmas.  Wow - found other poems written I assume by my dad - mama said he liked to write songs and poems.  I've had several interruptions this afternoon so don't have time to go through each thing I found in the envelope - maybe another day.

Memories.  We all have memories - good and bad.  The key thought is ....  what do you do with those memories?   For those of you reading this, I would suggest you start writing down memories of those who have already passed on.  Why?  So that you can share them with your children and/or grandchildren.   I need to do that too - my children never met their great grandparents.  I need to locate photos so that I can identify to them who they are.  Another project, perhaps.

I hope that this blog today has you thinking about good memories.  But the real question is.... what kind of memories are you making?   If you should die today - what would people say about you?  What would your spouse say?  What would your children say?  What would your grandchildren say?

Do they have a story to tell about you that wouldn't embarrass or shame you?  Have you created good memories for them?  Some of us have done some really stupid things; I know I'd like to erase mine from my children's minds.  I hope my life today has made a difference.  Does yours?

Have a good evening.....

Blessings!

The Job Hunt Continues.....

for both Tom and I.  I am confident that God has something for both of us, and He will direct us to it - in His timing.

I went for my interview yesterday and I think it went well.  Overall, I think it was an interesting interview, and I walked away confident that I was qualified for the job.  They did say they had a few others to interview yet so they didn't know when a decision would be made.  I reminded them that I would need to continue to interview with other companies while I wait on their answer.  At least I made it to the second interview!

So - with that said, today I am again needing to focus upon the want ads.  I hadn't posted my resume on Careerbuilder or Jobungo or any others yet.  Perhaps it is time to do that.  Wouldn't it be cool if I found something this week and could start on Monday?  It would truly be "all God"!  Which reminds me of a scripture I read this morning during my quiet time.  I'm going to borrow Charles Stanley's comments about that scripture.

Psalm 109:27 - "That they may know that this is your hand - that you, Lord, have done it."
"When we pray for some one's deliverance or for God to intervene in some situation, it is entirely appropriate to ask God to make it plain that what happens is no coincidence, but a direct answer to prayer." ~~ Charles Stanley

I have said from the very start that my life is in His hands.  I believe He orchestrated my early retirement and He will help me find a job now.  When that happens, it will truly be by His hand.

What have you prayed for - or asked for - that could only be by God's hand you received it?   I can list a few things; but will only tell about two.

When I got my previous job I was just learning about how to trust God.  December 1985 I asked Him to help me find a job.  I interviewed with two companies.  One I wanted, the other not so much.  I waited a few days and got an offer from the other company.  I called the one I wanted and asked if they had made a decision.  It was really weird for the HR person I spoke to just said "oh, yeah, you got it.  When do you want to start?".  It was all God.   I was there nearly 26 years.

Another time is when my daughter was so sick with leukemia.  After much fasting and praying with friends and family, much seeking God's favor to heal my daughter, He healed her.   She will soon be celebrating her 11th birthday leukemia free on October 5th.   All praise and all glory is His alone.

Sometimes life is hard and we struggle; sometimes with life itself, sometimes with finances, sometimes with our jobs, sometimes with family.  What you do with those struggles either strengthens you, or tears you down.  I choose to be strengthened - what do you choose?

As time winds down for my last check, I could choose to be anxious and frantic about the future.  I'm not.   My confidence is in Him. Not for what He will do for me, but because He can. I know that He loves me, and I am confident that whatever my future brings, He is in it.   He is all I need.

I am so blessed.  I have a Heavenly Father who loves me beyond measure, a loving husband, great children,  awesome grandchildren, and even a great granddaughter.  I have friends who will bring my concerns to Him in prayer and intercede for me.  I have family members who love me and encourage me.  I have so much to be thankful for.

Take some time to give thanks for all that you have been blessed with - and those things God chooses not to give you.  Sometimes not getting what we want is good too.

Blessings!

Some days.....

I just can't get with it - and this is one of them.  After sleeping sound Saturday night (thanks to two ibuprofen) and feeling rested yesterday, I had another night of wakefulness.  Now I'm struggling to think clearly and resist the urge to go back to bed and sleep.   In other words, I'm tired!  But I have much I need to get done today, plus I have an interview scheduled at 4PM.  I may just have to take a nap to obtain some of the needed rest I didn't get!

Yesterday at church we had great worship and a great message.  Sometimes it is hard to get both, but yesterday it was good.  I mean great.   The message was about the Ten Commandments.  You know, the ones that some people think are just suggestions?  They are commandments and if we follow them, they will protect and provide for us.  That is why God gave us these commandments - or guidelines, if you want to call them that.  Did you know there are two parts to the Ten Commandments?  The first 4 commandments are about us loving God.  The remaining 6 commandments are about us loving others.   The commandments aren't to bring us harm but to help us live good and healthy lives.  It's amazing how many people break them - including me on occasion, I'm afraid.  I try to obey, but self gets in the way a lot.

There are also three issues that we can change in regards to living a fulfilling life.  What are the issues?

We forget.  We don't remember the commandments and don't want to.  We forget to pass these things on to our children and grandchildren, that they may live long lives.  So how do we change that?  Retell the stories of the Bible and how God has worked in your life.  This is one reason I do this blog, when God does something I want to share it.  Sometimes my children and grandchildren read this.

Another issue is we base our relationship on emotions or spectacular events.  We get caught up in emotions and when the excitement fades, so does the relationship.  We can change that by building a committed relationship, one that will make it through all the ups and downs.

And, lastly, we have the issue of control.  Yeah, you know who I'm talking about!  You have to control everything (whether consciously or not) and want everything to be your way.  I find myself guilty of this control thing on occasion.  Our only solution to that is to die to self.  Let it go.  Is it really that big of a deal to get your own way?   I usually say I just 'choose my battles'.

Ultimately, God wants us to follow Him, not the guidelines (or commandments).  When we commit to Him and follow Him, we obey the commandments He gave.    Whatever you worship is what controls you.  Think about that!

I keep thinking about this story in the Not A Fan book by Kyle Idleman......

"A few months ago I was speaking in Houston, Texas, and a good-sized man, with a good-sized belt buckle, came up to me with tears in his eyes. He began to tell me the story of his prodigal daughter, how she went to college and totally turned her back on the faith. As soon as he started the story I knew how it would go. I've heard it so many times, even the details seem predictable. But when he finished, he didn't ask me why she was doing this or what had gone wrong. He wasn't looking for an explanation. Instead with one sentence he put his finger on what he thought happened. Here's what he said .. We raised her in Church, but we didn't raise her in Christ."

And we wonder why our world is in the shape it is in.   Just taking them to church doesn't teach them how to live if our lives do not reflect a life they can be proud of.   I've seen the mistakes I made reflected in my own children, as well as some of the good things.  I acknowledge my failure in raising them in Christ.  Sometimes home life and church life don't agree - and they should.

I've added and deleted quite a bit on this blog today.  I've rambled, and been brutally honest, and stated my feelings, and deleted it all.

Why?  Because it isn't important.  I can take my broken heart to my Heavenly Father and ask Him to heal it.   I can share with Him my excitement over spending time with a granddaughter this week.  I can take my weaknesses and ask Him to make me strong.   He will provide just what I need - when I am needing it.  I'm grateful He loves me enough that He provides all I need.

Check out the Ten Commandments - which ones are you keeping - and which ones are you breaking?  You may be surprised.

Blessings!

It only takes a thought....

to keep you up most of the night!  I don't know how much sleep I got last night, but I know I did get some.  What kept waking me last night?

Fear.  The What ifs.  How can I.  What should I do.  and many more.... like Guilt.  Anger.  Justification.  and many others like.... Worship.  Prayer.  Praise.....

You know all of these for I am sure they have plagued you one time or another!  Especially when you really prefer to get a good night's sleep.   I wasn't that tired when we went to bed, probably because I had had a cup of good coffee at a friend's house earlier in the evening.  Usually coffee late at night does not bother me, but I have cut way back on my coffee drinking lately.  No reason I cut back, I just did.

Last night my hubby's fear of my not finding a job within a very short time period right now, woke me up and gave me a dose of fear.  A dose of what if I don't find something, what are we going to do? A dose of what should I do - mail direct to these companies wanting executive or administrative assistants (which I am definitely qualified to do)?   All these thoughts began to circulate through my mind, causing me much frustration in trying to sleep.  I have not been afraid or worried for several months.  Even with my last check coming by the end of October I have not been afraid.  I have confidence that God (as I have shared before) will provide a job for me (and hopefully for hubby) in due time.  We aren't just sitting around, we are sending resumes out.

I have decided I like, and dislike, the new way of applying for a job.  With submitting a resume online it is convenient, but by morning one usually has a 'no thank you' note.  From what I am discovering, these companies' computers look for key words - in my case, administrative - put throughout the entire resume.  If it isn't there, or only once or twice, the computers do not kick out my resume.  Instead I get the form email that says I do meet their qualifications.  Malarkey!!  I know I am more than qualified and if they would actually read my resume, they would see that I am.

I applied a couple weeks ago and have had one interview with one place.  My 2nd interview has been changed from this past Wednesday to Monday late afternoon due to the interviewer's sickness.  I had been fairly confident all this time, but last night these fears starting working their way in to my thoughts.   So what did I do when that happened?

I started proclaiming God's Word that I do not need to be afraid.  When I do my part and apply for jobs, He will do His part and will provide for me.   I have held off applying some places because I wanted to see where this current interview will take me to.  Now I'm uncertain if I should continue to delay or go ahead.

Psalm 34:4 - "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears."

Psalm 91:1-2 - "'He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."'

When I come home from the interview on Monday afternoon, I will determine how I feel about the job once I receive more information.  I know I can do that job; I know the pay is quite a bit less than what I have said I needed for us to survive on.  But, I believe that God has brought this job for such a time as this.  If Tom can find a job too, it can help make up what I won't be bringing home.  We are really going to have to tighten our belts; it has probably been ten years since I have made this amount of money.  But, it is probably as close to my dream job as I can get.  Which really doesn't seem fair, but God is in control.

I have decided that if I need to, I am going to find companies within a ten mile radius of home.  If the interview doesn't go well, or if I don't get the job on Monday, I am going to mail my resume direct to these companies and hope they will take the time to at least look at the resume.  I don't need a form letter from the computer telling me I am not qualified for a job that I know I am clearly qualified for.  My intent is to be working prior to the middle of October.  Even if I have to go to Starbucks or work at Walmart for the seasonal help.  Any money coming in will be helpful after October.

If you are going through a difficult time right now, perhaps financially like we are, I encourage you to praise God for what He is going to do for you and ask Him to provide financially for what you need.  He loves to give to His children; if you aren't one, then perhaps you need to think about that too.  Not just for what He can and will give you, but because He can love you and be faithful to you far more than anyone else.

Psalm 91:9-16 - "If you make the Most High your dwelling— even the Lord, who is my refuge— then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.  For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.  You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.  With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!  NO FEAR!!

Psalm 23:  "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Don't let fear and the what if's keep you awake at night!  Proclaim the Word and tell that noise to get out of your mind!  I did!

Blessings!

I Want it NOW!

God can bring things or people to your mind at the oddest and sometimes most inconvenient times.

Is that a true statement?  Last night was one of those nights for me.   I'm grateful I knew what to do when it happened.

We had gone to bed and I was sound asleep, then my mind woke up.  No, I wasn't worried about a  job, or about the bills, or finances, or anything like that.  This used to happen to me often when the children were growing up.  My mind wakes up, the body stays asleep.

What caused my mind to wake up last night?  Our pastor went to Lebanon recently and appears to have picked up a 'bug' while there.  He is back home and has been a week today, but is very sick.  He was on my mind so I began to pray for him.  In my mind, of course, so that I didn't wake Tom up, but also because my body was still asleep.

I also thought of my beautiful daughter-in-law's father who has been afflicted with Parkinson's disease and dementia.  I have known this man for 20 years and he was always a healthy man, climbing the mountain several times a day when he was in town.  He was a missionary fellowship pastor and served for years in this capacity.  I have high respect for this man.   He is now a mere shell of the man he used to be, and the pain of it hit me last night and again this morning in my quiet time as I cried out to God to have mercy upon him and either heal him or take him home.  I don't think that was wrong to ask.  Why cause the family so much pain in seeing him this way, and caring for him still.  I have such respect and love for his wife; she has patiently bore all this in caring for him.  That is true love.  The family steps in to help and yet, it can become a strain for them as well.

I feel helpless.  I don't know what to do. So I do what I can do.  I can pray.  In the dark hours of the night I cried out to God for these two men, that our God would have mercy and bring healing and relief.  That He would rescue them from the enemy's diseases and set them free.  That He would send His angels to comfort them and bring them peace in the midst of their storms in life.

And I believe that God heard my prayers.  I don't know how He is going to answer them, but I poured out my heart in prayer for these men.  I know all things are done in His timing, in His plan.  Being patient is hard when it affects those you care about.  I want complete and total healing - NOW!

In His time... In His time.... He makes all things beautiful in His time.....  Lord please show me every day, as You're teaching me Your way, that You do just what You say.... in Your time.....

That's a chorus we learned a long time ago.  It has come back to me many times lately.  I want things done in My time.... but I have also learned that when I wait upon Him, in His timing, all things will come to pass.  It may be painful to wait, but He is in control.

Psalm 62:8 - "Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."

Psalm 63:1 - "O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water."

Sometimes God doesn't answer in the time frame we want Him to answer; sometimes God doesn't even answer the way we want Him to.  When we do our part by praying, especially when the Holy Spirit brings the request to mind, He will listen and He will hear our requests.  How He answers is up to Him; how we respond to the Holy Spirit's prompting to pray these requests is up to us.

When you wake up in the middle of the night, or you find your mind wandering during the day and thinking about someone, that may be your prompting to pray for them.  It doesn't have to be a long prayer, or even intense.  Just say, "Jesus, You know their need.  Would You please meet that need today?"  It may be someone who is sick, or it may be a loved one who is going through a difficult time and you don't even know it.  Sometimes rough days at work can smooth out when you say a quick prayer for them.   Be obedient to the Holy Spirit's prompting - and leave the rest to Jesus.

Blessings!

Her First Walk!

We finally got Marley a harness yesterday. I think it took Michael at Petco about a half hour to complete this task for us. We took Marley in with us and Michael was so good with her. We told him what we wanted to purchase (a harness to walk her with). He tried something called Gentle Leader - but it just wouldn't work for her. It was a collar and another strap that went around the mouth. Nope, nothing was going to stay there! After a few tries and Marley pulling it off her face, Michael gave up and selected a regular red harness for her. He showed us how to put it on her and quickly had her set up. It was awesome. Michael has such a gift with dogs, Marley included. He explained to us as well (after she had peed twice on the floor) that she is still a puppy (almost 6 months old) and when she slides down the visitor's leg and then pees as she collapses at their feet, she actually is  'surrendering'. She wants the rubdown, anything that feels good. It is mainly because she is still a puppy that she does this. Hopefully with walking, her stomach muscles will tighten and as she ages and learns control, it will stop these things from happening. At times we feel like we need to walk around with a paper towel and spray.

I took Marley out on her first walk around the block this morning .  Yes, Marley pulled me (or tried to) most of the way, but I kept pulling her back to walk with me and not in front of me.  We went early this morning so that it wasn't too hot, but I was still sweating when we got back, and it was only around the block!  Marley did real well in staying on the sidewalk versus trying to get in people's yards.  With this being her first time, I did allow her some leeway as all this was new to her.  She did know when to turn into our driveway, which I wondered if she would.   I think Marley enjoyed her walk; she collapsed on the cold tile floor after a long drink of water when we got back.

I think we are a lot like Marley.   When someone does something nice for us we tend to get mushy or sentimental and gentle with them.  No, we don't generally pee (I don't think), but if someone does something nice for us we tend to show them favor, don't you think?    If your spouse makes the bed and does the dishes and it is totally out of character for them, you want to praise them, right?  Then they want to do more things for you.  If your child picks up their toys and does all their homework, you want to praise and brag on them.  That encourages them to do more.  It's a win-win for all concerned.

And we are that way with God.  When God blesses us, we want to praise Him and say nice things about Him.  He gives us some financial relief or meets a need.  He heals someone physically or helps someone through a rough time.  We want to hang on His leg and surrender to Him, to praise Him; usually with the hopes that He will continue to bless us.   And we enjoy all that He gives us, don't we?

But what about the times when the road we walk on is rough, and the burden we carry is heavy?  Will you praise God in those times too?  Can't find a job to support your family?   Are you trusting in Him to provide by doing your part to find?  Having a difficult time with a relationship?  Sometimes you aren't supposed to hang on to it, sometimes you are to let go and trust God to bring you to the relationship He wants you to have.  Be patient and don't rush into relationships that God doesn't want you to have.  He wants to bring you love and happiness, not stress and depression.  Work is difficult?  Sometimes you can only do what you can do and leave the rest to God.  Finances got you down?  Check out Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey; learn how to pay down your debt quickly without going into debt more.  Pay your tithe first; yeah, the 10% of the gross amount.  You may not have enough money left to pay the bills at that time, but I guarantee you, and I promise you, that if you will put God first and give to Him first - as He commands - He will provide what you need to get through the rest of the month.   I have heard stories over and over - and have experienced some of these blessings myself - where when you give God all that belongs already to Him, He will give you all that you need - and in some cases - more.  Trust Him.

Malachi 3:8-10 -  “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.  'But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’  “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me.  Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

John 14:1 - “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.".........Jesus

Perhaps after reading this you decide to take a few minutes to ponder where you are today.  You look at your life and see where your choices have gotten you, and where your dependence upon God has taken you.  Are you still relying upon your abilities and your choices to get through each day, each journey?  How's that working for you?

Like taking Marley on her first walk, complete with harness and walking with me, sometimes we need to start out with baby steps and our Bible and learn what Jesus has to say about how we should depend upon Him.   I read a book years ago that a man turned to Christ by reading 'only the red'.  That means his Bible had Jesus' words in red and all he would read was what Jesus said.  With that, he came to believe.  However you choose to turn to Christ and trust in Him and His Word, I encourage you to do that.  Let today be your first walk in your new journey of trusting Him to guide and direct your path.  You will never regret it.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."  ..... Romans 15:13

Motivation.... maybe

Enroute to the gym today - first time in about six weeks for me - I suggested to my hubby that perhaps we ought to challenge our son, Ralph, to meet us at the gym on certain days.  Now this thought isn't to get our son there as much as it is to get us there.  We are good about making plans to go, and finding excuses to not go.  I was thinking if we had to meet something there, we would go.  Of course we have friends from church who go faithfully at 4AM to work out.  I think they are crazy.  They keep encouraging me to join them...... but I just can't commit.  I did think about it though.  For about 30 seconds.  Going later to meet my son there is more motivation than not.

Today, we did follow through and got our workout in.  Rather, Tom did the workout and I did the treadmill.  I know I need to get my speed and endurance back up for the One America Mini Marathon in Indianapolis next May.  Am not sure yet if Tom is going to commit to it or if I will need to sell his number come spring.  I'm committed, but with finding a job and airfare - two things that will definitely determine if I can go.  I'm sure I will be able to take off one day to go and it will have to be a weekend trip, but the airfare itself is an issue.  I'm still watching the rates and seeing if I can catch a sale.  So many things I have to work with.  But I do want to go and walk with family again.  I'd like to make it a yearly thing.

Speaking of jobs, I have a second interview tomorrow.  This will determine if I get the one job I have actually interviewed for.  I definitely am not feeling over confident, but am at peace whatever comes of this interview.  I'm still looking through ads and am set to send out more resumes should I walk away feeling it didn't go well.   I'm still trusting that God is in control of which job I receive.

I'm sitting here looking at a photo of my son's daughter.  She will turn 21 on September 28th.  Where have the years gone!   She has become a beautiful young lady.  She and her mama look so much alike we often have to look twice to see who we are talking to.   This granddaughter lives in Tucson and only makes it up to Phoenix occasionally.  I heard she will have karaoke time with her daddy for her 21st birthday somewhere.  I'm hoping we get to see her for a little while too while she is up that weekend.  I'm sure we will.

Motivation.  I used that for my heading so I'm thinking as to what could motivate me to do things.  I know I can use the One America Mini Marathon to work on my exercise and walking for motivation.  I want to beat my time of 3:48:11 from this year.  Got a lot of work to do, yet still time to get it done.  I plan to get a harness for Marley this afternoon at Petco so hopefully I can start tomorrow morning getting her out for a walk.  Perhaps that would help her not be so spastic at times.

Speaking of Marley, she is being a brat lately.  She eats her food, sometimes.  Yesterday morning I put it out for her and told her I would give her 1/2 hour and I was putting it up.  She devoured 3/4 of it.  Same at dinner time, she ate almost all of it.  This morning she turned her nose up at it.  Fine.  We put it up and we'll see how hungry she is when we feed her later.   I told Tom she is training us - not the other way around!  We have to stop giving in to her and get control.  I'm afraid we will have to invest in some training classes; just trying to get a harness on her sends her into a spastic run, thinking we are playing with her.  I don't want my arm flayed like she did recently.  We plan to take her to Petco, there is a man there by the name of Michael who has taught me a lot by just telling me what to do to get her trained.  She is 99% housebroken now.  The 1% is because every time she gets excited over company, she squats for them to pet her and pees.  I'm still thinking that has to do with her surgery at 2 months (spade) but perhaps as she ages she will not do that.  We have to make sure she is off carpet when she sees someone.

Motivation.  Well, I do plan to lose some weight before our trip back to Indiana for the mini marathon.  My motivation?  Hmm, have to think on that one.  I don't have any carrot dangling before me on this one, other than I am tired of being what I consider 'fat'.  Some don't, they call it 'fluffy'.  But they know and I know it is just belly fat.  And butt fat.  And leg fat.  My doctor told me that if I would walk 3 x week for 30 minutes and cut back on my carbs

I told Tom this morning that if we fixed a meal out of my weight watcher cookbook or the biggest loser cookbook then at least the meal itself would be healthy.  I did the breakfast frittatas this morning.  Only I didn't have egg substitute.  I mixed up about 7 egg whites and 2 egg yokes.  I had left over broccoli so sprayed a muffin tin with oil, and put about a tablespoon of broccoli in each muffin.  Then I put some of the egg white/yolk mixture on top of that.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, then I sprinkled very little cheese on top of that, and baked another 8 minutes.  Fixed us each a slice of toast and the frittatas - light and filling for breakfast.

My motivation for completing this blog is waning.  I've already been asked how many jobs have I applied for.  Geez!  I answered honestly; none yet.  At least not today.  I still plan to wait until I have my interview tomorrow before proceeding.  I just dislike very much being nagged about it.  Of course if I get a  job soon then I won't be here all day.

Take some time today to smell the flowers.  Most are blooming and dying just as quick with our hot, muggy weather.  My roses bloom then quickly fade away.  I know cooler weather is coming.... and our question is "when?".  It's time.

What can we motivate the weather to cool down?  If you can think of anything, let me know!  In the meantime, set your own motivational goals and work on them.  Things will only change if you make the effort to change them.

Blessings!

I Believe.......

I believe in Hope.  I believe that in everything there is a purpose under heaven, that all I do is governed by His hand.  I believe in Love.  I believe that when I love others more than I love myself, I have gained much.  I believe in Faith.  I believe that my God can accomplish anything He wants to accomplish.

I believe in all these things, and more.  I believe that God does not desire for us to live unfulfilled and painful lives full of want and distress.  I believe He DOES desire that we live a fulfilled life surrendered unto Him..... and when we do, He will bless our socks off!  Not saying life will be perfect or we will have all our wants, but that if you look for it, you will see His hand.

Just had to add that phrase - 'bless your socks off'.  I had forgotten it, but I love it.  We had dinner at the airport last night with a very dear friend who had a three hour layover while waiting for his next plane.  As we talked, he shared an email from someone we have known for years.  Her favorite blessing is that "God will bless your socks off!".

It was so good and uplifting to visit with our friend.  I love to hear what is going on in his life, what his church is doing.  He always asks how we are doing, what we are doing.  He loves us and we love him.  He has been such an intricate part of my journey in knowing Jesus.  Not that he is perfect by any means, but he has shown me what a servant of Jesus is like.  He taught me about grace.  It's like Paul and Apollos.  I've had people till the ground, others help plant seeds in me, and other still, who water me.

That is what we are called to do.  It isn't about any certain person (other than Jesus) who opens our eyes to our sinfulness and what we need to do to get our life on track; it isn't about who tills the ground and waters it and helps us grow.

What it is about, is that we choose to take that first step and surrender our lives to Jesus.

I Corinthians 3:5-9 - "What, after all, is Apollos?  And what is Paul?  Only servants, through whom you came to believe - as the Lord has assigned to each his task.  I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.  So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.  The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.  For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building."

Jennifer Hunt has written a book called The Hope Journey.  I know about the journey, which makes it hard for me to read at times.  The best part of her entire journey is that she chose courage to stand up to the enemy, get help, and lean into Jesus.  I am so proud of her.  I downloaded  the book on Saturday when I heard the book was released.  I read through to chapter 10 Saturday and finished it yesterday.  I think I had tears most of the way through it.  My heart breaks for what she had to endure, for the person who turned from God to such sinfulness, and for my own journey in life.  I encourage you to buy the book ($15) or download for Kindle or Nook ($3.47).

I Timothy 4:9-10 - "This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe."

I'm listening to a song by Chris Tomlin as I write this.  I love this song.  The lyrics touch my heart.

I Will Rise  (by Chris Tomlin)

There's a peace I've come to know
Though my heart and flesh may fail
There's an anchor for my soul
I can say, "It is well"

Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead

I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow, no more pain
I will rise on eagles' wings
Before my God, fall on my knees
And rise
I will rise

There's a day that's drawing near
When this darkness breaks to light
And the shadows disappear
And my faith shall be my eyes

And I hear the voice of many angels sing,
"Worthy is the Lamb"
And I hear the cry of every longing heart,
"Worthy is the Lamb"

I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow, no more pain
I will rise on eagles' wings
Before my God, fall on my knees
And rise
I will rise

There is a reason I believe.  I have been rescued from the depths of hell and have been set free in Christ.  He is the only reason I am here today.   How can I not be a devoted follower and worshipper of the One who sets me free from chains and bondage?!

Today is Monday, the beginning of a new week.  What are you going to do that will make a difference in your life - and in someone's life - this week?

What ever you choose, my prayer for you is that God will bless your socks off!

Blessings!

Loving my morning

I am alone this morning - well, except for Marley - because Tom went to a men's breakfast at church this morning.  Both of the boys went with him to hear Andy Lovenduski speak.  I have heard a lot of good stuff on Andy's speaking.  I was afraid that my boys wouldn't make it and that Tom would be disappointed, so I had to bring my fear to God this morning.   Oh me of little faith.  When I heard Tom leave I didn't hear any voices so was afraid one of the boys didn't show up - so I gave in and text'd him - and he replied his van was out front and he was with Tom.  (Thanks God)

I finished my quiet time, came out and put on a praise tape by Chris Tomlin and got on here - I'm loving the short time I have to just listen to praise music and write my thoughts.  I need to get ready soon to head to church for the women's ministry fall fashion show.  I'm helping with one of the tables, I think.  It should be a fun day.

Perhaps I'm loving this time too for I know my boys are hearing a great speaker and Tom is happy they are with him.  He prays so hard for both of them, as I do.  I pray that they both take something that is said this morning back home with them and at least ponder it.

I'm wondering if my faith is going to be tested this week.  First I wondered if the boys would go to the breakfast and I'm still looking for a job, as is Tom, and our finances right now are pretty tight.  I am confident we can get through this rough time, but I know that in two more pay checks nothing will be coming in and it is starting to loom ahead of us.  I should know this week if I get the job I interviewed for - but I am going to continue to put out my resume in case it isn't the one I am to get.  I am confident I can find something with more money, but I really feel this is where I am to be.  It is the closest to my 'dream job' I will probably ever get.  God is amazing.  He may just want to teach me some things.  I pray that my faith increases and that my dependence is solely upon Him.  I believe in His mercy.

Romans 9:14-16 - "What then shall we say?  Is God unjust?  Not at all!  For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."  It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy."

I Corinthians 2:9-10 "However, as it is written:  "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" - but God has revealed it to us by his spirit."

Do not depend upon your emotions, or the affirmation, or rejection, from others.  Others do not complete you.  Only Jesus Christ can set you free from the bonds that hold you.  Instead of running to things that tear you down, run to Him who can set you free.  Do your part and He will do His part.   Don't hang on to those who hurt you and tear you down; hang on to Jesus and He will set your path straight and give you the desires of your heart (if it is His desire for you!!).

May grace and peace be yours from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessings!

Friday already?

Wow - this has been a week of not getting much done, that's for sure.  Well, I did get my application in and an interview completed, and today Tom and I are going to donate blood, but other than that I can't think of anything major we did.

But we did do some resting up.  It would have been nice to have rested after we went to bed last night.  We were up until about 11 (which is unusual) watching NCIS reruns.  Marley had seemed fine all evening, going to bed about 8:30 or so, which is her usual.  1:00 this morning I hear her whining wanting to get out.  I get up and let her out, put her back in bed, and go back to bed myself.  At 3:00 - same thing.  Whining.  I get up, let her out, put her back to bed, and go back to bed.  At 3:30 - it happens again.  This time Tom is awakened and he sends me back to bed and he takes her out and leaves her out, and comes back to bed.  Then we slept until 7:30 I think - when we are usually up by 6AM.  Just the constant disruptions in our sleep, I guess, caused us to sleep longer.

Which has thrown our day out of whack.  We had things scheduled this morning, which after we slept late and did our quiet time, we put off until later.  We go to donate blood just before noon so now everything is centered around that.  My daughter wants to borrow a movie so I think we are going to go over there after donating blood to leave it with her.  We are almost there so why waste the gas to come home and me go back out.  We really need to take Marley over to the vet to get weighed and get her monthly heart pill.  Somehow or another we will get it all done.

With all that said - how many times do we plan things and they get turned upside down?  Perhaps you run late for the job and speed up a little bit, only to be delayed by getting stopped by the police.  Or perhaps it is just that traffic is slowing you down.  We get to be in such a big hurry to get to places and then rush about to leave and get back.

And we wonder why we stress and our blood pressure goes up.

I think that is one reason why I have enjoyed my time off work.  I've never had high blood pressure so that isn't a problem, but I have learned over the years that my impatience doesn't pay off.  When I start to get stressed, I need to step back and b-r-e-a-t-h-e, and just take my time.  A former boss taught me that.  She had the most positive outlook on life.  When I would get frustrated at something or someone, she would always help me see the bigger picture, help me see the positive side of the situation.  It always helped.  I've tried to maintain that outlook since.

I know that God's picture is much bigger than mine.  All I can see is where we are financially today, what our obligations are, things we need to do, where we need to go, etc.  God sees it all - to the end result!  He knows more than I do if I will be able to donate blood today.  I always pray that I can, but I am borderline anemic so sometimes can not.  But I always try.

He knows if I am going to get this job I interviewed for - or if He has something else in mind for me.  I have no clue.  He knows if there will be enough to pay all the bills this month, or if we will spend it on things we don't need.  He knows what day this is - Friday - and what it would bring.  He's even all set for tomorrow.

Who was that on Stalag 7 or something like that - Colonel Klink was one of the men, wasn't it on that show that this one guy would say .... "I know nothing"?   That's me.  I know nothing compared to the greatness of God.

That's why I can trust Him with today, and again tomorrow.  I can trust Him with what happens next week and I don't have a clue as to what that could be.  But He does.

Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

I know that God works for my good - so I'm leaving my life and my circumstances up to Him.  How about you?  Are you busy trying to change things yourself?  Trust Him.

Blessings!

God made me laugh this morning -

Why?  Because as I was reading in His Word this morning in Isaiah, he called some guys a name.  I know He has 'name called' before, but this morning it just struck me in a funny way.

Isaiah 7:3-4 (NKJV)- "Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field,  and say to him: ‘Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah."

Two stubs of smoking firebrands.  Isn't that an odd thing to say?  I just thought it was funny.  In other versions of the Bible it is still funny.

The New Living Translation is:  those two burned-out embers
The New International Version is:  these two smoldering stubs of firewood

What was God trying to say to Isaiah to tell Ahaz, son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, King of Judah?  Don't worry about King Rezin of Aram (Damascus was the capital of Aram) and Pekah, son of Remaliah king of Israel as they went to fight over Jerusalem.   God was saying don't worry (to Ahaz, King of Judah), I'm not going to let them win!  These two stubs of smoking firebrands just aren't going to defeat you cause I'm not going to let them!

There is other 'name calling' in the Bible, but I love the names that my God calls us, calls me.  He says we are Accepted, we are Loved, we are Forgiven, we are His, our names are carved in the palm of His hand.  And so many more.

I love what we can call Him - Jehovah, Adonai, El Shaddai, Jehovah Nissi (His banner over me is Love), Jehovah Rapha (The Lord who Heals), Jehovah Jireh (The Lord will Provide) and many others.  Sometimes just sitting quietly and calling out His Name brings a peace that refreshes and calms even the most agitated spirit.  Even Jesus has precious names ' Messiah, Redeemer, Resurrection and the Life, Savior, Shepherd, Son of God, Friend, Bright Morning Star' and many, many more.

Of course as we were growing up we learned many names to call our siblings - which I won't enter here.  Instead of looking for negative things to call each other, why don't we look for positive things to call each other.  Yes, you can be creative!  How about "Lovely", "Beloved", "Friend", "Dependable", "Caring", and I'm sure you can come up with many others.  Think about it and write down a few for those times you want to show your sibling that you care.

I bet you are sitting there reading this right now and thinking of some names you have called - or would like to call - your spouse, friend, or siblings.  IF it is a good thing, send them a text and just tell them you thought of them today and you wanted them to know you valued them.  Share the name you have today for them, the one that came to mind.  You just might make their day.

Blessings!

Day of the First Interview

Had an interview this morning.  I think it went well and I am confident that if I am the choice for the job, that I will be able to do the job well.  I found out what computer program they use and have already gone in and reviewed some of the pages off the advertised software program.  It actually looks simple and interesting.  I will have my final interview possibly next week and will see what God has planned from there.  Interestingly enough, when I was asked 'why did I think I would be the best candidate for the job', the first thing that popped in my mind was - "I am His, and I have His favor.  If He wants me to have it, it is mine."  Of course I can't say that, but that was my first thought.  And it is true.  I do belong to Him, and I do have His favor.  At this point, it seems like He has been leading me this way all along.

Why?  Because when they were looking for someone for this position a year and a half ago I "interviewed", sorta, because I was really upset with my boss.  I wanted out of where I was, didn't want the issues I had, and I was ready to walk away.  But I interviewed with the wrong mindset.  I didn't want a job, I wanted out of where I was.  God intervened and made me realize that wasn't where I was to be at that time and I sent two notes off to those I interviewed with to remove me from their list, that I was no longer interested.  Specific reasons were given, but it just wasn't time.  Over a year and a half later I have taken early retirement, I have gone on a few vacations, I've done a lot of things I wanted to do, and now it is time to find another job.  Surprisingly this past week the position opened up again.   I feel I can do the job; and hopefully those interviewing me will feel I am the best one for the job.  It just feels that now it is time I get serious about job hunting; vacations are over, and this position has opened up again.  Sounds like God intervening to me.  He orchestrates any thing He wants to - and since I have given Him permission to interfere in my life, I'm sure He is doing it all.  If I don't get it, well, I've had an interview which is the first one I've had in over 26 years.  I learned a lot about how to interview and what to expect.  It is a good thing.

I came across this scripture this morning, and I think it pretty well sums it up.

Psalm 16:5-8 (NIV) - "Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.  The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.  I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.  I have set the Lord always before me.  Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken."

Faith has been one of my primary spiritual gifts for years.  I know that if God said it, I can believe it, and there is no other question about it.  Nothing.  Whatever my portion is, God has assigned it, and He will see me through every interview, every door I walk through.  The thought just occurred to me -  Every job I have interviewed for all my working career I have either gotten on the spot or received a call shortly after that I had the job.   I believe that God has directed my path and every job I have had in the past has been a step to the next one.  Even though this isn't the dream job I desired, it is close enough for me if it is close enough for Him.  He knows my heart and He knows my dreams and He knows my restrictions.  So if He allows me this job, then I have the next best thing.  I still get to serve.  Hopefully I will receive the final interview next week and if it goes well, I will get the job.  That will be so cool.

How is your faith holding up?  I know that sometimes it is hard to believe that things are what they should be when it seems everything is against you.  If you stop and step back and review what got you to where you are, do you see things that you could have changed?  Do you see things that could only be God's hand upon you that got you through it?

I remember years ago receiving a call from one of my boys one time who asked if I had been praying for them.  Of course the answer was affirmative.  That child had been stopped by the police for something - and ended up being let go.  I don't want to remember all the things about it, but it makes me smile to remember that even then my children knew I was praying for them.  My daughter has called and asked 'did you pray for me today?' and would proceed to tell me how an accident was avoided or something that went wrong was ok.  I love to hear those God answers.

I really don't know how my faith grew; it wasn't something I was taught.  I believe it is because I have seen God answer many of my prayers.  Some I will need to ask in heaven why He didn't answer them the way I wanted Him to, but regardless, I have to trust His answer.  I trust His answers when the answer is NO.   Even though my heart cries yes.  He sees the big picture.  I only need to see His hand.

Blessings!

God is Good....All the Time

I'm feeling pretty good today.  I had been feeling pretty much wiped out after our vacation last week, but am better now.  What?  I had a vacation and was wiped out when it was all over?  Yup.  Tom and I talked about it last night for he was feeling the same way.  Just weighted down.  Tired.  Lazy.   We decided a lot had to do with the hours we kept last week; up until midnight most nights and awake again between 6 and 7AM.  And all we did was watch a couple movies and play games.  But now that we have started getting back into our 'routine' of going to bed around 10PM or so and up around 6AM, those extra couple hours of sleep make a difference.  Plus, the humidity has been really bad the past few days and we wonder if that hadn't been weighing us down.  Literally.   Ok, maybe these are just excuses, but we are glad to be getting back into our routines of getting more sleep and eating much, much better.  Now if we can only get our lazy butts to the gym!  We planned to go yesterday around 11AM - didn't happen.  We decided we would get up at 4AM today and head that way.  That didn't happen either.  I turned off the alarm.  In fact, I didn't get up until nearly 7AM, although Tom got up at 6AM.  Even Marley slept until nearly 7AM!

But today I am feeling like a huge weight has been taken off of me - don't know what it could be.  I don't have a job yet, and neither does Tom.  He has gone to talk to a potential employer, so if we both can get jobs fairly soon it will help things immensely.  Not that we are in bad shape - yet.  Still have a couple more 'retirement checks' to go before we will begin to stress.  In fact, if I don't get the job at the church that I applied for yesterday, I will probably intensify the submission of my resumes and not be quite as picky as I have been.   (whoo hoo!  Just got a phone call to come in for an initial interview at the church tomorrow!!)

I had breakfast this morning with a dear friend.  It was a good time of hearing what was going on in her life and sharing what is going on in mine.   I always enjoy meeting with her - and even better, she bought breakfast today!   It's going to be a good day - I've been blessed already!!

One of the things my friend and I talked about today was Christmas.  What we have done in the past, what our thoughts are for this year.  With both of us, it is all about family.  It isn't the number of gifts or how much the gifts cost, it is sharing time with those we love.  For me, it breathes life into me.  I just love being with those I love.

Even Marley.  Right now she is sprawled under my chair here at the desk.  For some reason (like humans) she has to be touching us, if at all possible.  She will lay down and put her paw over our feet - that is, if she hasn't already laid her body across our feet.   Or when we are in the recliner, she will lay down under the recliner.  She just wants us to be near.

Isn't that what we do sometimes, especially when life is tough and we are really struggling?  We want to get as close to Jesus or to our Heavenly Father (yes, one and the same, but Whom are you closer to?) as we possibly can.  We fall down at His feet in worship, we grab hold with our hands and hang on for dear life when things are tough.  We imagine His arms wrapped around us when we are hurting so badly and need someone to just love us and hold us.  And each response from Him is exactly what we need for that moment in time.  He supplies our every need.  It may not be our 'want', but our every need.

Philippians 4:19 - "And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

One thing I have also learned is that I can be content in whatever my circumstances are.  Philippians 4:11 says "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."   That means even when I don't have new clothes or a fancy car or when I have absolutely nothing, I can be content for my Hope is in Jesus.  When I have struggles emotionally, physically (yes, my broken toe still hurts), and even mentally or relationally, I can rest in Jesus, knowing that He is already at work in each and every situation.

What about you?  Is the paycheck a little short of all the bills this month?  Trust Jesus.  Do you have food on the table?  It doesn't have to be a banquet every meal, but enough to fill your hunger.  Are you feeling stressed out about your job or lack thereof?  Let Jesus take control.   Is there a problem in your relationship with others and/or with family or friends?  Ask Jesus to open and close doors as He determines.  Are the children struggling in school?  Say a prayer for them daily, that God will help them make wise choices, that they will choose to succeed rather than fail.  Ask Jesus to watch over and guide each and every decision you and your family makes.  Trust Him for all the answers - regardless of what they are.  Do your part, and trust Jesus to do His part.

Matthew 6:33 - "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

My God has proven to me time and again how faithful He is.  He has walked with me through many painful circumstances, held my hand during my deepest struggles, and held me in His arms when I hurt the most.  I trust Him with all that I am, with all of my life.  I am nothing without Him.  I cannot fail because He is on my side.  He is good, all the time.

Take a few minutes to sit back and reflect on how you see Jesus.  Do you consider Him a tyrant, trying to get you to do things His way?  He isn't like that.  You have free will and can make your own decisions and choices.  He wants you to do good; He wants to bless you.  When you choose to give things up, it is your choice.  He doesn't judge you by what you give up; He wants to love you just as you are.  What you choose to give up or do is to glorify and honor Him.

Every day we are given a choice to seek Jesus and His kingdom first - or to live our lives only for ourselves.   I choose to seek after Him.  His blessings are far greater than I can get on my own.   He loves me.  And He loves you.   He wants to give you all that you need.  Ask Him for it.  He's waiting.

Blessings!

Vacations are over - definitely time to find a job!

We had a great time last week up in Heber, Arizona with the brother and sister in law.  The weather was totally awesome (as in cooler than Phoenix) and we walked a little one day, and played a lot of games the other days.  The two games we played the most was Mexican Train (which they had never played but took a liking to, especially when they want to play with money.  We would throw a quarter into a bowl and the one who "lost" the round had to ante up another quarter.  The winner of the entire game (meaning low score), got the 'pot'.

The other game we played a lot of was "Blitz".  It is a three-card game and also fun.  Goal is to get 3 cards in the same suite to total 31.  Meaning like an Ace (11), and two other cards -  King, Queen, Jack or 10 (10).   You play with only 3 nickels - putting one in only if you lose.  You get to play at least 4 rounds, 3 with the nickel, and one of grace.  If you lose it - then you wait until all the others are finished - and the winner gets the pot.

We know these games inside and out, and I am pretty sure Tom will not want to play any of these games for some time to come.  We would play most afternoons, stop for dinner, and play again into the late hours of the day.  Tom and I are not used to those hours!   Today is Monday and we are hoping to get back into our normal routines this week.  Or at least some of them.

Today I need to review my resume and head down to the church.  I found out last week that the office manager position is open and I want to put in for it.   I still believe God orchestrated my early retirement last October and will help me find a job that will meet our needs before long.  My dream since 1997 has been to get on staff at this church - not necessarily in this position, but God knows what He's doing and I am going to trust Him through everything.   So, when I get my resume printed I will get dressed and head down that way.  I think the church is open now.

Marley got me up at 4AM this morning - and it was pouring down rain.  She made a quick run out and was right back.  I dried her off, then got her back into her crate so that I could go back to bed.  Not to happen.   I hadn't even got my robe back off when she was yiping again - so I came out and let her out again - and she took off in dead heat.  I finally grabbed the umbrella and went out to see what she was doing - and she was 'doing her business'.    When she finished, I tried to get her back into her crate - but she decided it was playtime.  I finally just stood by her crate and after about 20 minutes she went back in.  I figured I was pretty much awake by then so went to do my quiet time.    Tried to go back to sleep about 5:30 but sleep eluded me.

Need to get busy and get moving this morning.  Perhaps I can get back into some stories the rest of this week.

Blessings!

Labor Days Past - and my Son

I was reminiscing in an earlier blog about Labor Day and my memories of it.  The one in particular I shared briefly of was when we were growing up at home, and my mama would get up early on Labor Day and fry up a big batch of chicken (mmmmm, yummy) and make deviled eggs to take to the church picnic.  There was always also a contest for the best decorated cake.  I don't remember what the other cakes would look like, but my stepfather would always make a cake.  He really did!  Well, I don't think he baked it, but he would create the decoration.  What he would usually do is get a small Barbie type doll and stand up in the center of the cake, then he would use icing and make the cake her dress, putting icing on the doll and cake to make it complete.  He would put a feather in her hair sometimes, I think.  He usually won too, if memory serves me right.

We would all go to Danville Park in Danville, Indiana for the all-church picnic.  Us kids would run across the wooden swinging bridge and laugh as people would scream because it would start swinging and swaying.  We would climb the "mountain" and check out different things.  We would wade in the creek.  I remember there was an old house up on that hill..... in fact, I think I still have an old letter or two somewhere that was found in the house.  I need to see if I can find them and perhaps find the family they belonged to.  I haven't thought of the letters in years.

Once I married and moved away from home I didn't go to the Labor Day picnics anymore.  But there was one Labor Day in 1971 I had plans to go.  Well, originally I hadn't, but it was at least a thought earlier in the day.

I had awakened early that morning with a backache.  My children were all known to arrive late, and I had already gone a week over my due date of August 29.   Ralph, my first husband, and his brother Dennis were going hunting that morning.  It had all been planned for a few weeks.  I would go to my mother's and on to the picnic with my daughter Mary.  I was starting to squirm a bit after getting to my mother's house and told her so.  I shared my situation with my mama and we sat down to talk while things were cooking for the picnic.  Mama talked me through crocheting a small doily.  Wish I had really learned to crochet.   Then I got up - and my water broke.  I was still naive even with a second child and wasn't sure what was going on - but my mama knew!

Mama sent my stepfather to the gas station to fill up the gas tank and mama finished making things for lunch.  It seemed pretty normal for me, except for my discomfort, which was starting to grow stronger.  Ralph and Dennis arrived and once they were advised of the situation, loaded me into our VW bug and we headed the 45 minute drive to Hendricks County Hospital in Danville, Indiana.  The hospital is actually a short distance from Danville Park, where we were originally going to go.

Anyway - amidst strong pain shoots, we got to the hospital - and long story short, we arrived (if memory serves me correctly) around 9:36 and Ralph Arvine Smith III arrived at 10:36AM.   He was such a beautiful baby and my first son, my middle child.   And he was born on Labor Day, September 6, 1971.

We often talked that morning of it being Labor Day and I went into labor that day.  In fact, I think we had been talking about it the week prior.  It was a joke at the time - but became a reality.

Ralph has grown into his own person, as we all often do.  He has deep love for people, but is often reluctant to show it.   He tries hard not to do what you would expect him to do - he wants to do it his own way.  He is an excellent writer, although he would not admit it.  He has had a difficult life at times, lots of pain along his journey, but it has made him who he is.

He is my son, and I am proud of him.  I love him with all my heart, through the good times and the bad times.  He has a beautiful wife, whom I adore, and four children who I am proud to call my grandchildren.

Happy belated birthday, son.  I know I told you on "your day" but I am thinking of you as I think of memories past.  I pray for you, and I know that God has plans for you.  Some day they will come to fruition, if you don't give up.  You are a good man, and I am proud to be your mother.

I love you.

Getting back in the groove.....

Good morning!  It has been a few days since I've written anything - partly because we went on vacation and would not have internet service so I didn't take my computer, and partly because we have company.  But we are back home now, the internet is working, and all are still in bed; I'm taking advantage to steal away a few minutes for my blog.

Our trip was very restful and good.  We rented a cabin up at Bison Ranch.  We didn't do much but enjoy the cooler weather (cooler than Phoenix), a little walking, and a lot of game playing.  My in-laws are big game players so we have done a lot of that - mainly playing Mexican Train and Blitz.  My children will like Blitz, I think.  It was a fun few days and now we are back in the muggy heat in Phoenix.  A storm keeps playing like it wants to happen, but all we are getting is some rumbling thunder and mugginess.  At least right now.  Our company will be here until tomorrow so we have another play day today.  It has been fun having them here.

We picked up Marley from the pet hotel yesterday.  You'd think she would have been glad to see us.  I think she tried to ignore us after we picked her up.  She liked where she was, I guess, for she didn't seem to eager to see us.  Disappointing somewhat.   I'm sure you have seen the tear-jerk (for me) videos of soldiers coming home and their dogs running to see them and making all kinds of happy noises and jumping on them.  Well, Marley didn't do that.  She wouldn't even look at me in the car for the longest time.  Finally, after about ten minutes of being in the car, she climbed up in my lap (I was in the backseat with her), but still wouldn't look at me until we were nearly home.  I think we were being punished.   Naw, she probably was unsure what was happening next.  According to the pet hotel, which gave us a report card of her visit, she made a lot of friends and was very calm.   As it was the first time she was around other dogs, we were concerned.  We got to observe her through the glass when we went to pick her up.  She was with about 14 other dogs and she was walking around in 'doggy camp'.  I'm hoping that is a good sign she won't go wacko when we go walking with her.  Yeah, I'm hoping to finally get on that next week.   Getting her back onto schedule with us I hope won't be difficult.  She did wake me up just before 3AM to go outside, but she also slept until I woke her up at 7AM.  Well, she was awake, as I saw her tail wagging when I went to get her.

Yea!  It has started to really rain - I had to stop and let Marley back in.  Wow - the temperature has dropped some more - loving it!  I love a good rainy day; a soft steady rain.   I will need to get out in it later today so I hope it doesn't linger all day.  This is good sleeping weather; the steady rain falling, creating just enough noise to drown out the other noises.  Love it.

My last blog said I was going to talk about labor day - there is some reminiscing I still want to do - but since I have already filled today about Marley, I am going to wait until I can focus and share things I want to share about past Labor Days.

Speaking of which, this past Labor Day was really nice.  I always enjoy being with family and all went to my daughter's house for a cookout; it was a good day.  Well, I did stub my little toe on my grandson's bed... I thought it was broken as it turned really purple, but as the days came and went, the purple spread to my other toes and the top of my foot (making my foot look dirty) so I think I just bruised it real good.  My toes and foot are a shade of gray today so it is going away.  Other than that, for my part anyway, it was a good day and we began our trip up to Heber, AZ after lunch for vacation.  Now that we are back - play time is over.

Need to get off here and jump in the shower (or go play in the rain).  Hope that you are having a good day.  Hopefully I can get back on schedule in posting soon.

Blessings!

Things I have been learning.....

My son says he still loves me (of which I never doubted).

I can laugh when a child reads my blog and realizes I had mentioned them without mentioning them.   I will never hurt anyone intentionally by what I write.  I just want to write what I feel, think, and what ever it is I need to process.  Processing is good - it keeps me from relying on emotion or feelings.  I have worked through a lot of things over the year I have had this blog.

My daughter can put me on guilt trips too. (not making cheese ball?  Oh, I'll let Tricia know.)  A cheese ball was never on the menu - nor mentioned.  It was salad and deviled eggs.  I would have made it in a heartbeat had I known it was wanted.

My son writes 'got a dog'?  I am not sure I want to be asked to feed and water when they are out of town.  And that's ok.  That's why they have pet hotels when one is going to be gone longer than a few hours.  Not to say that we won't ask sometime.

Grandchildren have busy lives too.

When I'm not asked to be a part of their lives, it isn't because they don't want me, it is because they are busy or just don't think about it or think I'm busy.  It's not personal, and I don't take it that way.  I love my children and grandchildren so much, but sometimes my schedules and theirs don't always coincide.  And that is ok.  Neither of us has control of all the life schedules in a family.

See, I'm trying to learn things too.  Life isn't always about me.  It isn't even about me.  Well, my part of life is - but the 'leave and cleave' children do when they get married - or in some cases, start their own lives - I have learned (I hope) the art of letting go.   I wonder lately if they would agree.

But that doesn't mean I don't want to still be a part of their lives.   I have some pretty great children and grandchildren and love to spend time with them - what's wrong with that?  It isn't that they would be a bad influence on me.  I don't think.   They definitely keep my young.

No, I'm not writing these things to put anyone on a 'guilt trip'.... I'm just stating some things that over time I have learned.  Besides that, I needed to put something in my blog this morning before I get busy making salad and deviled eggs for lunch.   I had already been to the store and it was very late when I read the email so probably not going to get cheese ball this time.  If I had known earlier.....  I'll have to write it on the menu for Thanksgiving.... I think that is the next holiday we are all together.  Unless we somehow celebrate October birthdays this year.  At least one.

Speaking of birthdays, we are celebrating two this weekend.  One son, one son-in-law.   I'm sitting here thinking that perhaps we ought to plan a get together once a month and celebrate birthdays.  Sometimes some of the grandchildren don't get 'celebrated' because they are the only one who has a birthday that month so few remember to say happy birthday to them.  They may see some getting included with others, but not them.  Perhaps we need to discuss that for this upcoming year - or even here on out.  I'm thinking we have a granddaughter who will be celebrating a big '21' birthday the end of this month and I think has her weekend planned already.  I should have thought of it earlier rather than this morning! Something to think about and throw out to the children when we meet today.

Don't you really dislike it when you bite on the inside of your mouth - not once, but several times - and it is a really tender, raw section when you get up in the morning?  Yeah, that's me this morning.  Bit it a couple times yesterday and today it is really sore.  Hope I don't start it again today.  Kind of like life, isn't it?  Things are going really good and then you get 'kicked'.  Sometimes not once, but several times.   But do you know what the solution is?  The solution is that you get up off the floor when you have been kicked.  You dust yourself off, and you look at the situation differently and determine what you can do to make it better.  You learn from the experience, you don't keep going in and butting your head.

That is free advice this morning.  Just was thinking about it.  Of course getting to bed after midnight, laying awake for awhile, and getting awakened by the dog around 6AM can make one come up with all sorts of weird thoughts.

But being this is Labor Day I am also thinking about my mama.  When I was growing up in Indiana, our church always had the church picnic on Labor Day at the Danville Park in Danville, Indiana.  This park was awesome.  It had high mountains (ok

But early in the morning on Labor Day, my mama would get up early and start frying up a batch of fried chicken.  You have not tasted fried chicken like my mama's.  I would drive miles just to get a piece of her chicken.  It was fried just right - you know, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside.  My mama could cook.  Oh - she also made deviled eggs.  Maybe that is where I get it from.

That will be a story for Thursday, in celebration of my son who was born on Labor Day in 1971.

People are stirring so need to get busy and fix breakfast!  Have a blessed and safe Labor Day.

Blessings!

Guilt Trips.... The Master of it All....

Wow.  I was told last night that I am the - and I quote - "You are the master of guilt trips, mom".  Wow again.  I wasn't expecting that comment!

What started it?  Just as I finished my blog yesterday, the person who had called me earlier and created my entire thought process (isn't it just like God to use someone to bring about a conversation?), sent me a text that plans had changed.  That was ok, except for their first comment..... and again I quote.... "I'll be there Monday. Thanks for the guilt trip...lol".

I didn't know I had put them on a guilt trip; I keep going over my conversation and I don't recall anything other than my surprise that they would go away on a holiday and we have family coming into town.  Not that it should hold them here, but I was surprised.  And disappointed.  I guess it came through in my voice.  I don't think it was anything I said.  Besides, we had a very poor phone reception and even the call dropped once.  Their phone was to blame I was told.   Other than it being a holiday and family was planning to get together, I probably would never have known their plans; like, why would they call to tell me?  For approval?

So later I get another text from someone else and received the first quote I used above, that I was the 'master of guilt trips'.  Then they said they were joking.  However, it has given me the opportunity to ponder this situation.   Do my children think I am the 'master of guilt trips'?

This isn't the first time that a similar situation such as this has occurred - meaning a family has not been with us on a holiday.  It is expected most times when there are other families involved.   I don't recall putting anyone on a guilt trip when they took their family away on a Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday.  Not to say I haven't been hurt, disappointed or sad before.  It's life.  It's what kids do when they take spouses.  It's expected.  I did it to my own mother.   Especially when I moved from Indiana to Phoenix.  I never again got back for a holiday.  Unless you count mother's birthday as a holiday.  Yes, I felt bad every year, I felt guilty every year, I felt disappointed every year.  But I learned to deal with it and start my own traditions.  Which is a whole nother story which I can not go into.

I pondered this 'master of guilt trips' comment most of the night.  And I am still processing it this morning.  I have even sent a text to my siblings, asking them if our mother ever put them on guilt trips; have I really become our mother?  Interestingly, my sister has text'd to our brother for him to 'take this one'.  So she must have.  I just don't remember my mother putting me on a guilt trip. Or perhaps it is because I don't want to remember her that way.

Sure, there were times I did things she didn't like, but even so I believe she allowed me to make my choices.  If I felt bad about my choices, I always believed it was my sensitivity to the situation, to her.  We may have joked about 'putting me on a guilt trip' - as I do often with my own children and grandchildren - but I don't know that I can honestly say she would intentionally put me on a guilt trip.  I still believe it is my own conscience that causes me to feel uncomfortable about my decisions.

In this particular instance, things are different.   Guilt trip by me or not, I feel they have put the guilt trip on themselves, for they know what they were planning - well, it isn't the time for it.  They are rebellious at times so I'm surprised their plans changed.  I'm glad they did change their plans, and it isn't because of our company.  They had planned to connect with them tomorrow at church or after church.  I want to believe they realize family is important; more important than others at times.

I want to believe I do not interfere in my children's lives.  If they read this blog, and they feel I have - I'm sorry.  I try not to call unless important; I rarely drop by and never without calling first or letting you know.  And usually there is a reason.  Is it hard for me?  Absolutely.  I love you.  I want to be free to spend time with you.  Quality time.   I try to be available when you ask or need something.  I don't want to be the 'friend' you see occasionally; I want to be your mom who you enjoy being with on occasion.  (see, not even all the time).  So, if you feel I have put you on guilt trips (wow, have you put ME on a guilt trip???!!) I am so sorry.  Please forgive me.

How you live your life is your responsibility to God first, to your spouse second, your children third.  Once you take a spouse, next to God, they are your priority and responsibility.  The choices you make today will affect your relationship with God, your spouse, and your children from this day forward.  Your parents and siblings are on down the line under "others".  AND, if you are NOT married, your first responsibility is your relationship to God, THEN your children.  Then parents and siblings.  If you happen to have someone special come into your life, they must be gradually introduced and accepted.  Do not take yourself away from those that love and support you because of someone else.  That relationship will never work and you will only cause yourself, them, and others, pain.

Family is just that - Family.  They will love you and support you through most trials and most decisions (good and bad) that you make.   Master of guilt trips?  Still pondering that one.  Maybe I need to do some life changes.  That's not how I want to be remembered.

Still, I want to believe that God took this entire situation  and made me look at scripture to see how I was to process it.  I changed my attitude; I surrendered the situation to God.  Hmmm then God answered and changed the situation.   Was it just a process He wanted to take me through?

How are you doing on guilt trips?  Are you a 'master' or working your way up?  Or, is it in your eyes you are on the receiving end..... being put on a guilt trip.  Think about it.  Is it really a guilt trip - or is it your conscience bothering you?

Blessings!
