I know it is going to be a l-o-n-g day today - I woke up at 1AM and couldn't go back to sleep. Finally about 2:10AM or so I got up and went into my 'office' to read and have my quiet time. I did a lot of reading but couldn't get sleepy - until Tom brought me my coffee and water about 6:30AM. I could have gone back to bed then, but I chose not to. I'm sure I will get a nap in sometime today. In the meantime, I hope to get some things done.
Tom and our middle child, Ralph, have gone to breakfast. I don't mind staying home and letting them have some time. I got to spend a day or more with Ralph in December. I gave thought to calling my daughter to see if she wanted to go to breakfast, but going from past experience, she would not be able to get away.
So what do you do when you wake up in the wee morning hours and can't go back to sleep? I am not sure why I couldn't sleep - I even started going through scriptures in my mind! One thing that went through my mind was would I be able to finish the mini-marathon..... I am confident that I can, but since I have not participated in a marathon before, am not sure what it all is. I mean, I know there is a lot of walking/running and once in the pack you just stay there, but I don't like crowds and people pushing around me.... I think that is the part that I think about. But, I am going to be confident that I will get past that and move forward to completion. Stuart, our youngest son, is going to do the Pat Tillman walk April 21st and has suggested I join too. I'd love to, it is only 4.5 miles, but don't think Tom is thrilled about driving to Tempe to participate.
Another thing that kept me awake was my mind kept going over songs I love and events that happened, emails received and comments made. I'd push one thought away and another would come in. I wondered if I will find a job soon or if God has other plans for me. I am still confident that He will provide a job when He wants me to have it. My part is that I need to put forth the effort and apply. Which I have been doing. So I have all these things going through my mind...and all I want to do is sleep.... which escapes me.
Usually I enjoy waking up early - but usually that is 3-4AM and not 1AM. Sure does make a difference in the day. Was going to do a long walk today ...... am thinking I best take today off.... especially since I've had two good walks (5.65 and 4.01) the past two days. Will have to see if I get a nap in later this morning or not. Going to be another beautiful day here.
Don't have much to share today - need to get back into thinking story lines. They are so fun to pull together. Hope you have a blessed day!
Blessings!

The Nova Syndrome
I love it! My brother, Larry, sent me a really nice email this morning and in it he shared that he has walked 872 miles in the past 365 days because of me. Larry and I created a challenge last January 30th to walk and get healthy. He pushed it more than I did, and I have conceded that I do owe him a banana split, which was our 'prize'. He has lost over 30 pounds by walking this past year and feels more healthy than before. His wife also joined him (in her own way) with walking and exercise and diet (she even completed a mini-marathon last September!) - and when we went back for their son's wedding, she looked absolutely stunning and slender! I was blown away - although I must admit I do not know his wife very well nor had I seen her for a long time. Distance from family and the cost of airfare keeps us from seeing any of our siblings often. My brother also looked fabulous. Me... well, although I did some walking and/or exercise most days, I did not push myself.
A few lines from my brother's email.... hopefully this will encourage you (and me) to do what we need to do to get healthy........ "I lost 30 pounds, along with feeling so much better from exercising. I'm healthier and feel it. Oh, I've had sore legs, feet, buttock, toes, did I mention legs? Anyway, I feel much stronger and feel like I can do things I did when I was 40. (he is 66) I've had to replace the treadmill belt once and have gone through many pairs of running shoes.... I'm going to start calling it the Nova Syndrome from now on. Nova Syndrome = tiredness, dizzy, weak and sometimes starving suddenly, sweating more than I should and rapid heart pace. I experience the Nova Syndrome a lot especially on a long walk. I have the excuses (not to exercise), but I never, ever, use them. Keep them in the basket........... At 66 I feel great!!! I want you to feel that way too when you reach 66. This was a milestone for me...a full year charting my accomplishments to improve my health."
Larry even underscored and put in bold I was his inspiration to get healthy. Wow. I am humbled he chose to honor me this way. He inspires me by his harassment to get healthy and to walk. And, most of all, he put it 'out there' to compete in the mini-marathon of 13.1 miles in May. Am I afraid whether or not I will finish? Sure I am. But I do know one thing. I will begin. I am "in training" and I will compete. I will only fail if I choose not to compete. By God's grace and mercy to me, I will not only compete, but I will finish. All glory is His. I can do nothing in my own power.
So - how is your health? Started an exercise program in 2012? Was it a new year's resolution that lasted one day and you were too sore to do it again? Are you trusting in your own ability and allowing other people and other things to distract you? Try this.
Set a goal. Even if you just walk five miles a week to start - do it! Start. The crucial part of every beginning. The 'start'. The 'beginning'. Be an inspiration to others..... 'today is the first day of the rest of your life'. What is your life going to be like after today?
Blessings!

Beautiful day in Phoenix, AZ!
It is an absolutely beautiful day in Phoenix today! The sun is shining, the sky is clear, the air is crisp. Cool enough to need a sweat shirt, but warm enough to go walking in it. This is why I live in Arizona!
Reluctantly we got up and went to the gym this morning rather than walk outside. My brother is asking for a mileage count for the month of January (walking mileage) at the end of the month from my little sister and I. Yes, we are still 'in training' for our mini-marathon, but I must admit, many, many times I have asked myself 'what were you thinking'! But, even though my walking miles this month barely are over half of my brother's, I am still persistent in training. I believe he had 75 miles yesterday for just this month alone. I roughly figured mine up this morning and I think I have about 46. Hopefully by January 31 I can add another ten or so to my monthly total.
Tomorrow is one of our grandsons' birthday. Stevie will be 14 years old. Where has the time gone?! He asked that we get him a NKJV (New King James Version) Bible for his birthday. Which we did. He seemed to like it when we gave it to him yesterday when we were there. He was more impressed that we had his name imprinted on it, I think. He kept asking 'how did you do that?'! Made us laugh. I also made him a 'cake'. Well, sorta. A favorite recipe, for sure, but it is a recipe for my cranberry pumpkin nut bread. I just took a loaf of the bread that I had put in the freezer, thawed it out, and sliced it in three rows. Then used the whipped cream cheese frosting on it. Yummy! It was really, really good. In fact, our granddaughter said she wanted the same thing for her birthday in June! I will do that for her!
Got some things to get done before this day is out so need to get off here and quit stalling. Don't you just love those days when you can NOT do something if you want to? :-) Those don't come around here often though.
Take some time out for yourself today - do something special just for you.
Blessings!

I've been missed!
I have been out of town for a few days and was unable to get online to create a post. I had to laugh today when my middle child texts me that I'm a slacker for I hadn't posted anything since Friday! At least someone is checking on me! Thanks, son!
Yeah, we got a way for a few days and went up to Prescott Valley to visit friends. Had a wonderful time and it was good to attend church there where they love you and you feel it. Sometimes it is just good to get away and be with friends. We plan to do that again soon - but in another direction. Visiting friends is always fun.
Our fast is over and we are trying to be careful in beginning to eat a larger variety of foods. Yes, the fast seemed to be much longer than the 21 days we decided to fast. When eating just fruits and vegetables, one must really get creative to make the food interesting enough to eat! I don't know how vegetarians do it! I truly missed my coffee and my breads. Meats are so-so- not a big deal for me, but I do love my coffee and my bread. And I have had both since going off the fast. I think I lost five pounds during the fast, and Tom says he lost about 7 pounds. Of course that wasn't the reason for the fast, and we held off checking until the end. We both feel that we will do the 21 day fast again next year.
So what do we feel we accomplished during the 21 days of fasting? The satisfaction of knowing that we gave back to God the first fruit of the year. We had specific things we prayed for, and now we are going to wait and see what God will do with those requests. I truly believe that He will answer our requests -- but they will be in His timing, not mine. We have already starting discussing if we would want to fast the first of each month and continue to pray for those specific requests. Haven't committed to that yet, but are thinking it through. Never start a fast on the spur of the moment, you may end up with failure if you just think about it and proceed without specific plans.
Still doing our in-training walks. Friday we walked 8.81 miles and today we walked 2.5, I think. We went to a new location to walk - around Deer Valley Park. I didn't like it as well; can't say exactly why, perhaps because the sidewalk doesn't go around the park but will turn in and about the park. I like to know what I am walking and not trying to decide which way should I go. We did walk around it the best we could twice before Tom was ready to head back home. I'm hoping that by the end of February we will be getting to ten miles at least once. Perhaps I push myself harder than I should at times, but this is important to me. I haven't done anything like this before, and I need to do this for me. Just like some people will run a marathon just because they want to. I want to do this for myself. Not because my brother and his wife, or my sister and her husband are doing it, or even because Tom is doing it with me. I need - and want - to do it for me. Of course it is always fun to challenge siblings and spouses and just 'do it', too. I have truly enjoyed the bantering with my brother and sister about our walks.
I started a new book recently that I am caught up in. Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. This is one of the books where you want to take a pencil and start drawing circles! In fact, when I can get my mind focused and the time to give it some thought, I am going to do just that. Sissy, if you are reading this, download the book on the Nook. I love the story of Honi, the Circle Maker, who drew a circle and cried out to God for the answer. And God did answer. Can you not think of things you would put in a circle to pray about - and call on God to answer? Perhaps a job? (yes, that is one of mine) Financial help? Marriage? Wayward children? Unsaved siblings? Yes, I believe that God will answer each and every prayer that we offer him. I love to call out to God with my requests - I have complete confidence that He will answer each and every request. I have even - in my dreams - seen myself physically circling our church(es) and crying out to God for His mercy and grace for financial help, to draw His children unto Him, to teach us how to serve Him better, love Him more. To be willing to give up everything just to have a glance from Him. I'm only on chapter seven and I'm already caught up in the vision.
My oldest child's birthday was last Saturday and since we were out of town, we are getting together tomorrow and I will take her out to lunch. It will be fun to spend some time with her and catch up. This Friday is one of our grandson's birthdays. When did they all grow up? I love celebrating every child and every grandchild for their special day. I want them to know they are of great value to me and how much I love them.
I guess this is enough catch up for now and I need to move on and answer some emails. Hopefully I will have something to add tomorrow. :-)
Hope you are having a beautiful day!

Caring for others...regardless
Wow, where has this week gone! Even though it has been a short work week for many who are in the workforce, for those of us not working, it has been a regular week. Pretty much, anyway. Our week has been busy, yet lazy, somewhat. We have done some of our walking/training, but other than Monday, nothing in a big way. Today we have already gone to the gym to work on the upper body and loosen up - and will shortly be heading out for a long walk - hopefully. We'd like to jump up to 8 miles today. Will see!
Yesterday we volunteered along with North Hills Church and others to work with Project Connect. It is a program that helps the homeless. There was a place where the homeless could shower, get a haircut, find some clothes, reading glasses - and numerous 'booths' inside the gym where they could sign up for free phones, take a van to get a new driver's license, put in for a new birth certificate, find housing, employment, DES was there to take applications for food stamps, AHCCCS eligibility, etc. I was amazed at all the companies that were volunteering their time and services to help the homeless. That is faith and hope in action. Many, many were so grateful for this opportunity to get things they needed all in one place. And all the while, North Hills was serving breakfast or lunch to everyone there. It was awesome to see people working together to help people less fortunate. I heard a few stories of those who had jobs and were somewhat successful - only to lose everything for various reasons.
When people hear that someone is on AHCCCS, a lot of times they start to look down on that person. You know they do. It's 'free insurance'. My understanding came many, many years ago. I had only been working at an AHCCCS health plan a couple years when I went out to the lobby to talk with a man who had come in to speak to my boss. As I sat with him, he shared his story. He didn't look like someone who needed to be on AHCCCS. His story touched my heart. He was formerly employed as a professor. His wife was an attorney. They had money in the bank. The mortgage was nearly paid for on the house. They had been healthy for years, so when medical insurance came due one month, his wife decided they didn't need to pay for it anymore. They rarely went to the doctor, they were healthy, active. It didn't seem to be needed. So she quit paying it. Within six months, his wife started getting sick. It was discovered she had a brain tumor. Long story short - she had very expensive surgery to remove the tumor. A long stay in the hospital. The professor left his position so that he could take care of her when she came home. She died a few months later. Their savings went to pay the doctors and hospital bills, and still not enough. They lost the house that was nearly paid for because they had no income and could not pay the bills. He was left with nothing but a few memories and the basics he needed to survive. He had nothing. That was why he was on AHCCCS. Who can judge someone on AHCCCS without hearing their story? I have never forgotten this man and the story he shared.
Many shared similar stories yesterday with their 'guest guide' as they were escorted around to the different areas for the things they needed. One woman worked in a bar to some money to survive on and was grateful she had just been able to rent a house. Only problem is, she hasn't been able to save to pay a $500 electric bill from a previous rental so they are living there without electricity. Another man worked as a plumber but had lost his job and had been unable to find another job because he didn't have all the necessary skills, he needed to go to school to learn the new skills. Who would have thought plumbing would be so intricate but I guess one must be able to identify what pipe goes to what. The stories we heard touched our hearts.
But for the grace of God, go you, or me.
Who can you help today to get through a rough patch? Know someone who could use $10 just to buy some milk and a few groceries? It isn't just the homeless who need help. Sometimes it can be your neighbor, or a family member.
Several years ago when my little sissy was single, she had her own little house with her two boys and they were doing ok, but obviously things are tough when the spouse doesn't pay child support. One day in my quiet time I heard 'send ***** $20'. I thought about it and checked my wallet. I had $30 in my wallet - why didn't God tell me to send all of it? I don't know, but I would have had He told me to. I put $20 in an envelope and mailed it to my sissy. She called me when she received it and said that it was not only an answer to prayer for she needed to get some prescriptions and didn't have the money to do that, but she was able to tell the boys how she had prayed to God to meet their needs, and He did. What if I hadn't obeyed? What if I decided I needed the money more than she did? I didn't know what she needed. But God did. And I have learned over the years, when God speaks, I listen, and I obey.
I'm all for blessing others - and being blessed! (I'm so easy, I'm blessed just by spending time with my children and grandchildren!) Give unto others as you would have them give unto you. Sometime when you are in need, your kindness will be remembered.
Blessings!

And so it starts.....
Today I started focusing on sending out resumes. I had only sent one out prior to Christmas, and none yet this year. Until today. Will be checking out different places and leaving/sending resumes until I find something that is a 'fit'. I know what I can do, and will see what gets offered. I'm leaving it all in God's hands and trusting Him to bring what He wants me to do.
Just like I did 26 years ago. Wow. Has it really been that long since I looked for a job! I prayed, I applied, I got the job. I stayed nearly 26 years before taking the 'early retirement'. Isn't God good! I am trusting in His leading once again as I search for new employment.
I also stopped by a couple elementary schools today and applied to be a volunteer to read to the children at their schools. I love children and enjoy reading to them. I need to find out what teachers my two grandsons have at their school for I did apply there. I'd love to surprise them and get to read in their classroom (although the oldest one may not have that now) one day before I find a job. It takes about a week to process so will see. I can do it as long as I'm not working.
I called my 'old' office to advise my former boss that the Washington School District may be calling them to check me out as they do a background check. I talked with my former co-worker whom I adore. This woman is the absolute greatest! If you ever need someone who is professional and efficient, she would be the one. It was good to talk with her and catch up. They FINALLY have replaced me and that person starts in February. It's been nearly 3 months since I left - and they were interviewing before I left. Does that mean I am hard to replace?
It is a different feeling to look for a job. I've only had to do this a few times, thank God. He has been faithful to me in keeping me working. I believe that when we put everything, including job hunting, in His hands, He is faithful to provide for our need. I need to do my part of course, like send off my resume, but I am trusting Him - whether it takes one week or six months - that He will provide exactly what and where He wants me. If I don't have a job then, that is my answer too. He will provide either way. Yeah, I trust Him that much.
So how has your year been going? Are you looking for employment and getting anxious? Are you trusting in God to provide for you and your family and all your needs? He will, you know. One day at a time - that statement is used for so many things - and it works in job-hunting as well. Take it all, one day at a time.
Blessings!
My fun day today - new furniture and lunch with friends!
Today is a busy, exciting day! No, not because it is a 'holiday', but because my furniture (new sofa and recliner) arrive today AND I get to have lunch with some of my favorite people! Some of the medical directors I have worked with in the past are getting together for lunch today and asked me to join them. I love these people. When I worked with them, they were the most caring and helpful individuals and were always willing to stop what they were doing to answer my questions. I am so excited about going to lunch with them today. They have blessed my life.
I also want to run over to one of the school district offices and get fingerprinted and fill out the paperwork to be able to read to the children at school. I did this for my daughter when she taught ESL in the Cartwright school district several years ago - and loved it. I am excited about being able to do it again - and while I'm not working, I can. I saw someone at church yesterday whom I could talk to about it and we also talked about the possibility of being a teacher's aide or teacher's assistant. That would be an entire new career for me, but one that stirs my heart. I don't know about pay, and I know it wouldn't be a whole lot, but still, if I can help a child, I am more blessed than being paid large sums of money.
I think of men and women who give up six figure jobs to go on the mission fields. God provides all that they need for their expenses. I know that God will provide all that we need - He already has over the years when we were struggling. No, I'm not going out on the mission field, but in reality, the entire world is a mission field. So many people do not believe in God. They have their gods, their idols, but they don't believe in God. How sad is that. How can you not look at the beautiful skies, the sunrises and the sunsets and not believe in God who created them? I remember when my daughter was born, my brother in law was looking at her feet, so tiny, and he commented, "How can someone see a baby this small with such tiny fingers and toes, and not believe there is a God who created her?"
There was a time, many years ago, when I lived in Kirklin, IN that my first husband and I were totally broke, and both of us unemployed. I was pregnant with our third child. That year someone dropped off a large basket of food and left on our doorstep. Not many years ago, when Tom and I were struggling financially when in-between jobs, Christmas morning Tom went out to get the paper and someone had left two bags for us. Inside were gifts for Tom and I for Christmas. We never knew who dropped it off; I have my thoughts on who did it, but have never asked. Their kindness I have never forgotten.
There I go again - letting my thoughts ramble on. But, I do need to get off here and get ready for lunch with my friends.
What are you doing this day? Sleeping in? Cleaning house? Relaxing? Whatever you do, I pray that you will find blessings and fulfillment. And another thought.... who is in need that you could do something for them anonymously?
Blessings!

I gave up....
After searching for a long time for the booklet I was needing - I gave up and bought a new sensor. The battery must have died on the one I had for once I dropped the new one in my shoe and connected my ipod it was ready to go. Should have done that first instead of wasting so much time. But then, I did get my desk and some drawers cleaned out. That is a positive.
So I am ready to begin our walks again - but today is very cloudy and very dreary looking. Where is our beautiful sunshine?! Of course I could get on the treadmill, but this is Sunday, and a day of 'rest', correct? I think I will take it as that. But tomorrow, rain or shine, will either be out on the canal walking or at the gym. Got to keep pushing my endurance level.
Had dinner last night with our daughter and her family - well, minus a granddaughter. We had a good time, good food, and the men sat where they could see the TV and the game. It was fun getting to just be with the family and talk. I get such great joy out of being with the grandchildren, listening to them and just loving on them and being loved back.
Today we went to church and was able to see three of our other grandsons and our daughter-in-law. It is always a joy to see them. Love getting all the hugs. I think I am a spoiled grandma! Give me hugs and I'm content.
Speaking of church, we really enjoyed the service this morning. The message was one that we could grab on to, just like last week. I love hearing messages that help me look at my life and see where - and even how - I need to change and to grow into the woman God has created me to be. Everyone needs to grow - God has a plan for each one of you.
So how is your Sunday going? Did you make it to church this morning? Curled up in front of the TV watching the game? Or a movie? Reading a book? I'm thinking I may curl up in my rocking chair and just chill for awhile. Wonder if I can get the hubby to watch a movie versus the game. Would that be nice of me to ask? Maybe I won't. He just finished running the sweeper and dusting... I should let him be.
Hope that you are having a good day!
Blessings!

Where did I put it?
Don't you hate it when you put something away, "right where I will know where it is", and you don't remember where that place is? I don't think it is part of 'old age' as we like to tease about, my reasoning is that my mind is so full, that it is blocking out where I placed this paper I want to find. I have looked probably about two hours for it - and still can not find it. I have looked every place I could have put something.....but obviously not where it is. Oh well. It's not life or death. Just wanted to reset the sensor for my Nike - it isn't working correctly.
Still in training for the mini-marathon. I think I am doing pretty good (2.2 miles on Monday, 2.2 miles on Tuesday, 6.6 miles on Wednesday) and I get an email from my brother in Indiana of his walk and pace time. I keep telling him I have little short legs so for me it is farther than it is for him!
I took yesterday as a 'rest day' but we will be going out to walk when my hubby gets back from visiting a friend. I think we are going to do perhaps 4 miles today, guess it depends on how we feel. I hope my hubby gets his Motoactv working where it can give us our pace, time and miles correctly. My sensor started giving incorrect information. I thought it was just mine - but my sissy in Florida said she walked two miles this morning and it showed the pace was 19. something. Now I know she did not walk that slow! Mine did the same thing. Hope I can reset it correctly today before we head out.
Found my resume this morning so am going to review it and see where I can send it out to. I'm just wondering how it is going to work with wanting to take time off in May for the mini-marathon. I need to check airfares too. I heard they were going to go up. Just my luck! I want a job in which I can be with people and help them, and enjoy the work.
Today is another beautiful day in Phoenix, although it was 37 early this morning! It feels much warmer now so I know we will enjoy our walk.
Hope that you are enjoying the day - even thought it is Friday, January 13th. I believe in God and that all things are under His control, so I don't worry about all that superstitious stuff.
Blessings!

Hurt Friends, Hurt Friends
Interesting title, don't you think? Sigh. I wish it wasn't true, but it is. I got a telephone call from an 'old' friend, one whom we have been close to. He is very upset about our decision to leave our place of worship. I tried to explain to him that where we last Sunday isn't the reason we left, nor is it necessarily where we are to stay. It didn't matter. We hurt him. And that makes me very sad. Like I said in an earlier post, I knew we left without a blessing, but I still believe that God is going to bring something good out of all this. When God says 'move', he usually means NOW, and not several months down the road - which is what we did, not wanting to hurt anyone. We still hurt them. The extra months didn't matter.
The sky is starting to cloud up and I believe rain is in the forecast for the weekend. We have had some beautiful weather. Yesterday we walked 6.6 miles again so I took today off while Tom went to the gym. But, I still got exercise in - I mopped the kitchen floor (on my hands and knees!) while he was gone. See, I may be spoiled, but I still do some things around here.
Went to a Bible study last night. Tom is going to one on Boundaries and he is excited about getting started on that. My Bible study is going to be outstanding! Beth Moore has come out with a Bible study on James. Yeah, the one that really gets after you about the tongue. She has even challenged us - to memorize all 5 chapters! I would love to do it, but I'm still processing it. I may attempt it and see how it goes. I can't say I 'love' the book of James in the Bible, but when I know I need to get reined in, I often read it to realign myself with the Word. I often say I get whipped by it. Those that have read James know exactly what I mean. The tongue is a vicious fire! I'm looking forward to learning a lot of new things in this study.
It is kind of a quiet day today, not much going on. I think it is curl up with a good book weather, for sure - or maybe a good movie and a bag of popcorn. Sure do love my popcorn.
Hope that you are having a fabulous day and that you are facing the new year with optimism and joy.
Blessings!

Don't Worry, Pray, Tell God, Thank Him, Experience God's Peace
Yes, it's a long title, but it has been our journey for several months now. Yes, it is also from the scripture I shared with you awhile back. I'll put it below again so you can read it.
Philippians 4:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
Philippians 4:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
I have posted many times of our struggles this past year, without sharing (always) specifically what that obstacle/struggle has been. The obstacles/struggles have been painful, leaving us frustrated, confused, angry, and hurt. We have fasted, we have prayed, and finally, we realized that God has been showing us all along what we should do. Leave. Walk away.
But we didn't want to hurt those we called friends. It finally got to the point God used a message last Sunday with the points of:
1) Recognize the Problem. (that was the easy part)
2) Make a Plan. (another easy process)
3) Take Action. (hardest thing we ever had to do)
to make us make the decision we could no longer ignore God's obstacles and needed to do what we needed to do. We continued to pray and fast about the situation. Yesterday Tom gave our decision to those that needed to know. We leave. We walk away. We know our friends are hurt, and we are so sorry they are. But, we needed to do what God has been pushing us to do for a long time. We left without a blessing, for sure, but we know that God will bless us for our commitment to Him. Yes, we are also continuing the fast until January 22, just as we planned in the beginning. The fast was unto God, giving Him back the firstfruit of the year.
So, how has our fast been going? We have managed to stick to it, although it has been tempting at times to quit and eat that cookie, I must confess. We will continue to the end, giving God all the glory for His faithfulness to us. I can't wait to see what else He is going to do in our lives this year. He's on the move for sure!
Going back to the scripture above, that is where we have been, and that is where we are now. We don't worry about the future, we pray and tell God what our needs are. We thank Him for His goodness and faithfulness, His love and mercy to us, and at the end of the day, just as now at the end of the journey we have been on, we experience God's peace. There is nothing like it.
Blessings!

Where is the time going?
I can not believe it is already the 9th of January, and I feel like I have not accomplished much of anything! The rooms I wanted to declutter, I haven't started on. My focus has been on training for the mini-marathon and praying during this 21 day prayer and fasting journey we are on. And relaxing, of course. Which is why I haven't gotten more done.
I'm watching two cats walking across the back of our block fence. Interesting. They are just sitting there enjoying the warmth of the sun, just like they don't have a care in the world. LOL Tom just came home and as I hear him coming in the back door, the two cats have scattered. Tom and cats do not get along and they know he doesn't like them in our yard! But they will be back shortly. They always are.
Well, with Tom home, he also brought the suggestion of us walking to the gym this morning rather than driving there and then going walking. He feels we can do both - workout and walk - this way. It's about two miles to the gym, I think. I asked him what about walking back after working out. He doesn't think that will be a problem. This should be interesting, but it will also be a short walk for us today for training. I need to change and get ready if that is what we are going to do. It is a little nippy out this morning and only to get to 67 today. Nothing like our gorgeous weather last week!
Hope that your week is starting out well and that you are looking forward to the day ahead. Be encouraged to keep on your journey you chose to walk this year!
Blessings!

Running Away.....
Yep - that is what we have done today! It is a beautiful sunny day in Arizona and we decided to just go out and do some things together. It has been a good day. We even went to a couple shelters to look for a dog. We saw a couple at one place, and debated, but decided to wait. One we really liked, but it was afraid of men. Must have been treated badly by a man at some time. We still have a bed, toys, snacks, a leash, and all that we bought prior to Christmas, looking for a dog. We just haven't found 'that one'. When the time is right, God will bring the right dog to us.
We are enjoying this little break we are giving ourselves this weekend. Doing nothing special, just being together and discussing some things. Some times we get so busy with life that we don't take time to just talk. You would think with us both 'retired' that we would have plenty of time - but I have found I am more busy than when I was trying to work all this in when I was working! I know, I have heard that statement before too, but I think it is because we don't have to multi-task as much and can enjoy doing whatever it is we are doing.
One thing that is our goal this weekend is taking down our Christmas tree! Can't believe it is still up - but it is. I may do it later this afternoon - or at least get all the decorations put away.
I did buy a new 32" TV for my office. I am moving things around in there and I want to give myself more room to workout. That being said, I need to have a bigger TV. :-) If I move this piece of furniture here, and that one there, and move this here, it will look great! Want to get a futon in there so that I can curl up and do my quiet time in the morning. :-) I don't use it as an office anyway - just my 'everything I don't put away' room. Now when my youngest son gets his own place, I have more things to give to him to help him set up house.
Nothing new to talk about today but wanted to just jump on for a few minutes. I hope your day is restful and peaceful. We all need these days. Days in which you don't have to run everywhere or be anywhere, you can just enjoy doing whatever you want to do. Nice.
Blessings!

Another day...
Yesterday I wrote a post about something that really annoyed me - and annoys me (past and present) - and I got a text from my daughter that I was babbling and that I might want to delete it. Which I did. Why did I delete it? Because I was babbling. I was putting 'out there' my frustration with people who use and manipulate people. I felt better after I wrote it - and posted it - because it shows that I, too, am human and am not perfect by any means. I sometimes allow my emotions to get the best of me - whether it be anger, frustration, annoyance - or even indifference. Sometimes I let my emotions 'have their way with me' because it feels good - just like it sometimes feels good in a pity party. Ever have those? Unfortunately, I must confess that I do too, but when I recognize what I'm doing, I leave that party. Life is too short to be in a pity party all the time.
So today is another day and the sun is shining and the Lord is still on His Throne. Makes the day good. Tom and I spent time praying about this 'annoyance' last night before we went to bed, and again in our quiet time this morning. God has calmed my spirit down and I feel I need to confront this person for what they did - for it isn't the first time, and I'd like for it to be the last - but I need to continue to process what needs to be said. I do not want to 'attack' them, but to speak the words in love. Until I can do that, I need to remain silent.
Do you have people in your life that annoy you? They try to manipulate you and tell you one thing and it is going to be thus and so - and within 24 hours you find out they called other people to get their opinion then call you back and change everything. Do we do that? Do I do that? I pray not! If I need others' opinion, I need to contact them before making a decision and giving that decision - not after. I want my 'yes' to be 'yes' and my 'no' to be 'no'. I love how my dear friend and mentor, Pastor Steve Chiles, would deal with something like this. He wouldn't make a decision on the spot. He would say 'Let me get back with you on this'. That would allow time for him to process and to pray. Then he would get back with the person and say what needed to be said. That way no one is 'annoyed' or hurt or frustrated or angry. More people need to practice it.
As I prayed last night about this situation, I asked God to show Tom, as the spiritual leader in our home, what we should do. We have to be in agreement in these decisions. It isn't just my call. If it was left up to me, we would have already made a lot of changes. Tom keeps me in check. I don't always agree with him, but unless God shows me my decision is the correct one, I need to let Tom be the head of our home and make the decisions that need to be made. In the meantime, I continue to process and pray. And Tom and I continue to discuss as needed.
When someone gets to you, whether it be in annoyance, anger, frustration - however, sometimes it helps to write out what you feel (perhaps not where the world can read it though). Then tear it up or erase it and allow God to take care of the situation. Take your hands off and watch how God will turn the situation around. Perhaps still not how you were told in the beginning, but how He wants it to be. Our first step is to be willing to step back and listen for His response. And be silent.
Blessings!

Another Wednesday morning....
What a beautiful day it is outside! I hear it is to be around 78 degrees again today. No, I'm not out in it, but can see the outside from my window as I sit here at the computer. I was out yesterday doing some mindless shopping. Actually, there were a couple things I wanted to look at - and did - and bought a little bit more. But, it was beautiful being outside. I'll be going out later today as I have a meeting to go to.
But for now, wanted to add a few notes and then make myself get busy and clean out my closets. You know, where we keep stuffing all our clothes whether they fit or not. I don't want to get rid of a lot, but there are some things I haven't worn for awhile that I probably won't wear - you know, like long black skirts, and things like that. Yeah I could still wear them, but I don't think I need three of them - especially since I haven't worn any of them for a few years. Need to fold the t-shirts and put in a drawer rather than hanging up. I work out in them - who cares if they are wrinkled! But, when my hubby does the laundry, he hangs up everything on hangers - it makes it so easy to just go ahead and hang up rather than take off the hanger and fold.
Also need to get some things done for church. Tom asked me to put something on the bulletin board regarding the fast some of us in the church are doing. I don't know how many or who specifically, except for another couple who said they were doing it, but one doesn't have to fast to bring requests before God. If they don't feel called to fast, they can still pray.
Tom and I are doing well on the fast. Of course if I do the cooking, I can make sure that Tom holds to what he is giving up as he eats whatever I fix. I've stuck to my fruits and vegetables and water, but he has only given up red meat and pork, bread and desserts. I've managed to be creative with dinner. For example, last night we had a big salad, edamames, an orange, baked potatoes, and Tom had some chicken with his meal. Healthy and filling. For awhile. This is day 4. I fixed Tom an omelet for breakfast while I had a fruit protein shake. Glad we have an orange tree out back - we are raiding it for fresh oranges daily.
How are you doing thus far in 2012? Did you decide to go on the 'diet' everyone always says they are going to do? Did you choose to do a fast to focus on specific things to bring before the Lord? Or fast just to draw near to Him? Whatever you have chosen for 2012, I pray that your choice is the right one, and that you are striving to achieve that goal. If you have a special need you would like prayer for, please let me know. I'd be honored to bring you before our Father in prayer.
Blessings!

I love Arizona!
Can you believe it is January in Arizona?! Yesterday and today we have had temperatures in the upper 70's - I'm loving it! I feel bad for family members in Indiana - I heard it was 27 and snow today. My little sissy sent me a photo of the forest behind her house - and it looked so cold and dreary with stark trees and a gray misty look. Brrrrr! this is why I live in Arizona!
Tom and I started to go to the gym this morning but it was really crowded - we both forgot this is a day off for many people - and guess where they all went?! We decided not to go and went over to the canal to get a walk in. We walked 6.6 miles today - and it was starting to get warm by the time we finished. My legs felt like wood and my toes were burning! I hope it is not going to be a daily feeling! Need to get my training in for the walk in May. After our walk we went to lunch, then over to Best Buy where Tom bought a new toy. I will have to put a plug in for it - if it does all that it says it does - it's pretty cool! It's called (I think) Motoactv - the ultimate fusion of music and fitness. It is put out by Motorola and just came out in November we were told. It not only downloads music, but also has a GPS that will tell you have far you have walked/run/biked, your pace, calories, etc. It's being charged up now - will try to download to it tomorrow. LOL You may get a call, Ralph, to come help us!
After we did that - we came home and took a nap - pretty much a relaxed day since our walk. Just finished putting the touches on dinner (lots of vegetables!) and will probably watch movies tonight or read. Both of us are involved in books so reading is easy to pick up where you left off.
Still a beautiful day out side. I just heard on the news that tomorrow is going to be about the same. I love Arizona! Hope that you in Arizona are able to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather before it gets really hot - and family in Indiana - I sure hope you are keeping warm!
Blessings!

January 1, 2012
And here we are - the first day of the new year. I even remembered to write 2012 when I wrote in my journal this morning. Tomorrow I will probably do 2011 again. It just takes awhile, doesn't it!
We came over to our daughter's after church today to meet up with her family and her two brothers. One brought his family, one didn't. Miss getting to see those grandchildren - but I have plenty here to get hugs from. :-)
We have a tradition in our family. Actually, my mama started it many years ago. For new years day, one has to have pork (in some form), cabbage (again, in some form), and black-eyed peas. I have continued that tradition because I want my children and grandchildren to remember traditions from my mama. For years we would have ham, coleslaw and black-eyed peas, but for several years now it is revolved to BBQ ribs, coleslaw and black-eyed peas. Doesn't matter if we have anything else or not - we have to have that for the menu. Why? Because I want to do it that way. My mama always told me that it was called a 'poor man's lunch. Certainly not the extravagant way we cook/make it now, but since my mama was from Tennessee, I can see a piece of pork, cooked cabbage and black-eyed peas for a 'poor man's lunch'.
Oh - another tradition my mama did was in the coleslaw she would hide a silver dollar. Along with the lunch, whoever (without searching for it) received the silver dollar in their coleslaw, got to keep it. That was to also bring them luck throughout the year. Usually Ralph, my middle child, is the one who always found it. The funny thing is - he would let everyone else go ahead of him and get their food. He would always go last. He said that way he could load up since everyone already had their food. Well, today things did not go as planned. One of our granddaughters, Tricia, found the quarter in the last bite of coleslaw on her plate. Oh, yeah.... my mama gave silver dollars..... I use quarters.
It has been a good day. I love spending time with family. Just thought of something else my daughter got us doing a couple years ago. You can do it too. On a piece of paper put 2012. Then list the following in a column: Physical Goal; Spiritual Goal; Financial Goal; Personal Goal. Beside each one write out your goal for 2012. I am proud to say I did achieve 3 of my 4 for 2011. What I didn't make? My personal goal of running a 5K. Just didn't get around to training for it. At least this time I could put a mini-marathon down since I will be doing that in Indiana in May. We have sealed our 2012 goals in an envelope and they are now put away until January 1, 2013.
Today is also the first day of my 21 day fast. It has been difficult at times - especially since I did the cooking for lunch! But, I maintained my fast to have fruit and vegetables throughout the day. I don't share that to brag or to build myself up. I share it to encourage you. It is hard to fast - even when God calls you to it. I will not be sharing the journey every day, but will on occasion for the next 20 days share what I'm doing, how I'm doing. Spending time with God is priceless and bringing to Him my requests - well, I know He hears me. My fast is not for me, it is for my family for whom I pray, for my church and others that I care about, and for the communities around us. I also include my friends in my prayers. I want to see God move in all three areas and I want to get out of the way so that He can.
This first week my focus is my husband, children and their families, as well as extended family members. Friends are also included in my prayers. If someone was praying for you, what you want them to be praying? Sometimes people don't ask for prayer, they just hope someone is praying. They don't want anyone to know they have a need. Share your need - someone may be waiting to bless you, and be blessed by helping.
I can't wait to see - and hear - what God is doing and will be doing within my family and friends as I bring them before Him.
Blessings!
