My brother sent my little sissy and I a text message this morning asking what our mileage was for this month. I can't believe that I actually beat him this month! But, I can also assure you it will probably be my last time of beating my brother!
As I counted up our miles for this month, I was afraid it wouldn't be that good for the past couple weeks we haven't gone but once a week. But, our diligence has paid off. We walked 62.25 miles for the month of February. Not as good as I wanted but good enough to beat my brother's 29 miles! I need to start focusing on using the treadmill when Tom doesn't want to walk the canal. Yeah, sometimes he holds me back, but that still isn't an excuse - I still have a treadmill. My little sissy came in with 17 miles. She's doing well, considering all that is going on in her life right now.
Tom and I did walk 9 miles yesterday. I didn't post it on facebook for it isn't our best. I like posting when I have a new record for us to post. He mentioned we would walk tomorrow - and will try for longer than our recorded 11 miles. I want to get our endurance in so that come April we can work on speed. Yesterday we were still over 15 minute mile, but less than 16. Got to get it around 14- 14:30 minute/mile for me to be happy with it. Two months before we head to Indy.
Today we won't be walking as Tom went to the gym, I had some shopping to do and I need to finish up my lesson for class tonight. I am really enjoying the class on James. One of my very dear friends is facilitating the class and makes it so interesting! As I am sure you are aware, James doesn't mince words when it comes to obedience, and doing what is right. Maybe I will devote some time to our studies in my blog another time. Trust me, though, I'm being wrung through the wringer! Not that I am so bad, but I need to be more conscious of what I do and say.
So how are you doing with your exercise program? I'm grateful I don't have to argue with my hubby about going to the gym. When I have nothing going on, I'm ok with going, but sometimes I just need time to do what I want to do - or just time alone. With us being together all the time now, I sometimes crave just a bit of time for me. I'm sure it works both ways - he hadn't been used to me being home all the time either so he has had to change his schedule around some.
Hope that you are having a blessed day!
Blessings!

Keeping up with our training....
The past couple weeks I have become a 'slug'. I can't even blame it on Tom, who will not "allow" me to walk by myself along the canal. I have a treadmill here at home, I could even go to the gym. In all fairness to myself, I did go to the gym one time and walked. And I did walk one time here at home. But, over the past two weeks, sure haven't done much walking otherwise. We did an 11 mile walk about two weeks ago today, then a 6.06 mile walk last week. Tom was complaining of a pain in his upper thigh so didn't want to push it, not knowing what was wrong. I easily found other ways to occupy my time instead of walking. He went to the doctor on Friday, and miraculously, it hasn't hurt since. No, the doctor didn't do anything but move his foot different directions to see if it made his leg hurt. So Tom has told me today that "tomorrow" we will try doing our long walk again. I am hesitant on that because we haven't been walking - and to try to do a long walk may be too much. I am hoping to get on my treadmill later today so that I can at least get my body back in motion. I keep telling myself I need to get active again - but it is so easy to let the other things use up my time.
Things like working on a small quilt. Working on a puzzle. Working on my class homework. Going to seminar. Going to church. Getting a massage. Getting my nails done. Spending time with family. Going shopping. Reading emails and facebook. Going out for lunch. Watching NCIS. Watching The Biggest Loser. Watching The Gifted Man. Reading. Visiting friends. Picking up grandchildren. Just sitting and staring out the window.
See..... all good things. Time consuming things. Things that interfere with what I feel is important. Like my walking/training for this mini-marathon. Not bad things that interfere, but that I have not been managing my time well so that I allow myself time to exercise. Good grief, it is only walking! You would think I could manage that! And I will.
I am going to choose to cut back in other areas and focus on time management. That is, how I am managing my time in areas of my life. How much time am I giving to these other 'things' that I could be walking and getting my training in. Now, also in fairness to myself, when I was watching TV the past two weeks (which is really not THAT often), I was able to work on the quilt and get it done in about ten days. That means all hand stitching, praying over the quilt, etc. I gave the quilt away last night and I believe that not only did I surprise the recipient, but she was blessed. Which was my desire and brought me great joy.
The fun part of walking on my treadmill at home is that I put a movie in the TV and watch it while I'm walking. Makes the walk much easier. The good part about walking outside is that I get to enjoy the fresh air and get vitamin D from the sun. Tom and I usually talk while we walk as well - which is much easier than when the TV is on or I am busy doing something at home. If I'm busy, I don't like to be interrupted. At least by walking together he gets my undivided attention. Hmmm, maybe that could be an incentive for him - he is always asking for my undivided attention! :-)
Back to my time management - of course God gets the first part of my morning when I awaken. Then I usually come get on the computer to check out a blog, facebook, emails, write in my blog, and off I get until the next day. Unless there is something I need to do that requires the computer. After that, I focus on homework, and whatever else is ahead of me in the day. Somewhere in that time I need to focus on exercise and walking. Starting today. Since Tom wants to walk 'tomorrow' I will get on my treadmill this afternoon. I will start writing down 'appointments' on my calendar to ensure I get everything done. I will manage my time better.
What about you? Do you find everything else is getting in the way of exercise? When you get up in the morning, are you just sitting there trying to decide what to do.... and three cups of coffee later you decide you need to go do something? Let's try this together! Get a sheet of paper (or a calendar) and write down the time you get up in the morning, and block out specific times that you know you need to get something done, such as getting the kids off to school, picking them up, meetings, scheduled appointments, shopping (realizing Home Depot and Lowes can take awhile), etc. Look at what time is left and even if it is only 15 minutes to start, get up and go for a walk. Take time to process your thoughts.
I have found that when I give God the first fruits of my day (my first morning hours), that any thing else I need and want to do (really want to do) can easily fit in my day. I need to keep my focus on my calendar and what is 'next'. And if I choose not to do it, then I need to get it on the next day's schedule and do what I have changed it to. Otherwise, the 'want to' is just 'out there'.
Take some time each morning to think on what you want to do with your day. Who do you want to share that time with, what do you want to give your time up for? Make it worth it. Each minute we have is treasured time. Make it count.
Blessings!

Psalm 91 and other thoughts....
We went to a BridgeBuilders seminar this morning on Psalm 91. As Peggy Joyce Ruth (www.peggyjoyceruth.org) shared about Psalm 91, I was reminded of when my daughter had acute lymphoblastic leukemia with the philadephia chromosome (ALL+P) back in 2001. I read Psalm 91 over her in the hospital, and prayed it for her many times. It took less than 8 months for her to be diagnosed, have chemotherapy, and receive a bone marrow transplant. It took only five months for her to be off all transplant medications. It has now been over ten years and she is still leukemia free and off transplant meds and healthy. Praise God!
91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Psalm 91 - New King James Version (NKJV)
Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God
91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”
I believe with all my heart that God heard all our prayers for Mary and has given her not only healing, but long life. To Him is all Praise and thanks.
The second session was on another topic which also spoke to me. Those who trust in the Lord shall not be disappointed.
1 Peter 2:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
6 For this is contained in [a]Scripture: "Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious cornerstone, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed."
When we trust in God's Word, we can expect God to do something. It still may not be what we want, but when we trust in Him, we will not be disappointed. Other Bible versions say 'shamed' or 'confounded'. God knows what is best for us as He can see the BIG picture - and all we see is what is in front of us for today.
For example, I saw a puppy yesterday that I wanted really, really, bad. Cost wise it was more than we could pay, plus get a crate for it, so we walked away. It hurt. I thought of the puppy often yesterday and again today. The difference is, this afternoon as I did some shopping, I found myself repeating over and over, "I trust in the Lord, therefore I will not be disappointed." Yes, it still hurt that I couldn't have this puppy I wanted so badly, but I know that God will not disappoint me. I know He will give me what I desire when it is time. He sees the big picture and as I trust in Him to provide, I will not be disappointed.
Does this mean that God is going to give me a puppy? No, it doesn't. It means that He will not disappoint me, but I can trust Him to give me something better. When or what, I do not know. What I do know is that He loves me unconditionally, He knows my pain, and He wants to give me what my heart desires. And even more than a puppy, I desire more of Him. As I repeated "I trust in the Lord, therefore I will not be disappointed", I found the pain in my heart fading. I truly do trust in the Lord, whether He gives me anything or not.
What about you? What are you trusting in? Or, better yet, WHO are you trusting in? Is your money, your home, your job - all these things - are they your idol? Do you trust in things that were created - or in God who created you? Our God is a jealous God. He says to not have anything in place of Him. Nothing. He is God and there is no other.
Make a decision to trust in Him, you won't be disappointed.
Blessings!

Moments like these....
I love the early mornings when it is so quiet that all you hear is the grandmother clock ticking nearby. Well, I guess I do have a couple other clocks that tick too, but it is the quietness that I love. Sometimes we allow so much busyness in our lives that it clutters our ears with noise. Here I sit this morning and all I hear is the sound of the clocks. At this moment, no other noise. Silence. Peace. Quiet.
Do you realize that some people never have this treasure of silence? Perhaps it is you. At home the TV is always going, or the radio, or the children (or grandchildren!) are running about, or people are always talking. In the car the radio is usually blaring and unless you are alone, there are people trying to talk over the radio noise. At work it is the telephone, the busyness of work that sounds in your ears all day long. And you come home to the same thing.
Noise. Cluttered noise.
Not that noise is bad. I love, love, love being with my children and grandchildren and sharing life and the noise that comes with it. I love doing things with my husband and going places. I enjoy some noise. I even love watching NCIS and Biggest Loser on TV (my two favorite shows). And I love watching my chick flick movies. Noise can also be good.
Noise. Refreshing noise.
But most of all, I love the quiet times when I can silence my world and allow myself to go within and ponder the things I need and want to ponder. I love to go on walks where I can choose to think - or not think - about my day. I love the silence when I read. I love my quiet times with God in the early morning. And I love it when God speaks to my heart and shares His thoughts with me.
Noise. Fulfilling noise.
Do you allow yourself some spaces of quiet just to focus upon yourself, your task at hand? As I write this, two pictures have come to mind.
1) Moms who go to the bathroom just to get a few moments of quiet (and the little ones are knocking on the door and going 'mom'? 'mom'? 'mom'? and putting their little fingers under the door).
2) The commercial on TV where the young son is playing his electric guitar really, really, loud and the father gets up from his chair and silently opens the door of the child's room..... and unplugs the guitar. The son doesn't have a clue what happened.
Both of these pictures make me smile. I miss those days of hiding in the bathroom for a few moments of quiet and little fingers under the door. Never had a problem with the other, but I can understand the father's desire to turn off the noise.
What about you? Do you have so much noise around you all day that sometimes you think that you can't think? Do you find that after awhile the noise is so intense that it distracts you from the task in front of you? Perhaps you need to step back and see what noise can be eliminated. (no, you can't get rid of your children - but perhaps find quiet things for them to do). Perhaps the volume just needs to be turned down.
Perhaps you need to get up a little earlier in the day - or stay up a little while after the others have gone to bed - and just be quiet. Turn some music on softly if you must, but embrace the quietness. Cut out the distractions of the day. God can definitely speak any time He wants to, in noise or in quietness. Sometimes it takes quietness for Him to get our attention, and for us to listen. Take some time for you today. Sit in silence for a few minutes. You may find yourself refreshed, and looking forward to these moments of solitude. Five minutes can make a world of difference.
Blessings!

I have curtains! and waiting....
I took two of my grandchildren shopping with me yesterday with the purpose of finding curtains for my kitchen. I believe I have mentioned before how I had bought curtains, and this granddaughter vetoed them so I returned them to Sears. Yesterday we found curtains that both grandchildren agreed on. Now to get them ironed and hung up! My excuse right now is that my ironing board is in the cabinet that has a desk set in front of it. But, I will get to it soon and get them hung up.
I was reading this morning in my current book about how we look to other people and ourselves to solve our issues, our problems, when in fact we should be turning to God first. I know, looks like I did that above, doesn't it! But I am now talking about real issues. Things like paying the bills. Making crucial decisions. (and yes, I could have prayed and asked God to help us find the perfect curtains, but I confess, I didn't. What we chose didn't matter to me. What was more important was valuing my grandchildren's opinion).
How many times do we need help on doing something, but we don't think about asking God first? I read another blog this morning in which the person was having issues they were unable to solve for several hours. I wonder if they had stopped to ask God for wisdom to know what to do if it would have been resolved in much less time? Or someone else who is having difficulty with marriage and life, if they would stop and ask God for wisdom and help and be content to wait upon the answer and not rush into other things and screw their life up even more. Or even someone else who is dependent upon appearances and even though asks God for help, continues their own way. Or someone who loses their keys and needs them right away - do they take time to offer up a prayer (before or after they search everywhere) and ask God where they are? Not saying in each example God was asked and it still happened this way.... but what if....
I love the biography of George Mueller. This man had so much faith. I remember one story - of many told - of how he sat down at the long table at an orphanage he had founded. Ready for breakfast, all the children were sitting and waiting. The housekeeper kept whispering to George Mueller "we don't have any food". He just ignored her, bowed his head, and thanked God for providing for them. Immediately a knock was heard at the door. A baker had day old bread left over that he wanted to give to the orphanage. And then the milk truck (remember those times?) lost a wheel and to keep the milk from spoiling, donated the milk to the orphanage. Yeah, both just that morning. Just at the breakfast hour. God provided.
God loves to provide everything that we NEED. He doesn't always give us what we want. As I look about my house, I see so much 'stuff' that I truly do not need, although at the time I probably thought I couldn't live without it. So much clutter. I have started clearing out things and donating and giving away items. Some things are harder to give up than I thought, but even then I try to think through if I really need them. Even yet today I prayed that God would give me wisdom to know what to let go of and what I would need to keep.
I am still learning to call on God first each day with all our needs. I know He hears me. I must be patient and not rush ahead and do it my way. His timing is always better than mine.
Trust in Him daily for each of your needs. Do not rush into relationships, contracts, plans, without asking Him first. There is a saying about jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Don't get burned! Just stop and ask 'what do I do here, Lord?' and then be patient. It may be quick or it may take awhile. Things are always better in His timing. Oh, and don't forget to thank Him.
Blessings!

Blessings!

President's Day....
Today is President's Day and most, if not all, businesses and schools and churches are closed. Yea for them - it made this the 3rd day of a 3 day weekend! When one works, they come few and far between! But for us who are currently not working, it is just another day. The plus side for me, is the grandchildren are also out of school and I'm thinking of picking one up to go shopping later today. Maybe. Just thinking about it. Still need curtains for my kitchen windows. The last ones I bought my granddaughter vetoed them. So back to the store they went. The curtains, that is.
We plan to go out for a walk in a couple hours. Unfortunately, hubby has been complaining for several days now of pain in one leg. He finally called for a doctor's appointment to get it checked out. He has walked, and is willing to walk again today - but I may just do the treadmill so he doesn't have to. We still have plenty of time to continue our long-distance training. We will see how he is doing later on. If he doesn't feel he can walk today - I wonder if I can get my daughter to do a short walk with me. The treadmill can be boring - although I now have moved the TV to where I can see it and put in some of my favorite movies (Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, etc) where I watch and walk. It helps take the time away. I used to read and walk, but I need to work on speed too, so holding a book and walking is difficult when bouncing up and down quickly. I still have lots of Shirley Temple movies that I haven't watched in a long, long time.
So what are you doing today? Is it a day off work for you? I know my daughter-in-law has to work today. That's what happens when you are in the medical field - you don't get many days off. I'm grateful for that! If I am in the hospital or in a nursing home, I would want to continue my treatment and not be put off because someone had the day off. I'm grateful to those who want to help others and accept the limitations of their jobs. Then there are others in types of employment they must continue working just to have a job - groceries, real estate, and others. Not going to sit here and try to think of them all. I know my daughter would rag on me (real estate) because she said she had to work today anyway. Guess that means she can't walk with me.
I stopped by my son's yesterday to drop off some vegetables I had gotten for them from Market on the Move. I loved it the three boys climbed into my van and wanted to go with me. First time they have done that in a long, long time. I offered to take them for a ride, but they had things they needed to do and could not go. Plus, I didn't have a booster seat for the little one, although he kept assuring me he didn't need one. Of course he doesn't weigh enough to be without one, and still needs to use one. I think I may have to go to Savers and see if I can't find a used booster seat to have for times such as these.
My grandchildren are my joy, for sure. I am so grateful that God has blessed my life with them. I am even more grateful that they want me to be a part of their lives.
Hope you have a good day today - and hug your children - or grandchildren, as much as you can. Some day they will be gone out into the world and may just be too busy with life to learn from you. This time is precious.
Blessings!

Busy and fun day - February 18th
What a busy - and yet, fun day today! I got up early to go over to the church to help with the 'Market on the Move' that was there today. I helped set up tables, boxes and sort out food. For about 3 1/2 hours I was moving constantly - definitely do not need to go walk nor work out today! From there I came home for a short time then headed over to my daughter's to pick her and my granddaughter up - and we had our pedicures done today!
Of course we had to discuss on the way home whose toes are the prettiest! (mine are, in case you are wondering) Even though we weren't together long, just getting out and doing something fun was great. Got home a little bit ago and I guess we are going to Outback for dinner tonight. YEA! Means I don't have to cook - but will need to tomorrow - got chicken thawing out in the refrigerator!
Maybe I will find a long baking recipe so that the house will smell yummy all day. Think I will have to check out the cookbooks! We have gotten so 'lazy' with the microwaves - it is so easy to 'cook' a meal in them. Do our young children and grandchildren even know what baking in the oven is - other than for cookies, I mean?
I remember back in 1983 when I got my first microwave. We had gone to a store to get something else - and Tom wanted to also get a microwave. I didn't want one and argued with him about it. I love to smell a roast baking in the oven all day and allowing time for things to bake. Well, we got in a really big fight where I stormed out of the store. I got chewed out all the way home on why we needed a microwave - and when we got home I was so angry - I went back and bought it just to shut every one up about it! Many times since I have wondered how did I ever get along without one!
So I have gotten lazy - or would the right term be - used a more convenient method, to bake/cook since that time. I still miss my baking - but haven't done much for a long time. Perhaps now is a good time to start while I'm not working.
I think it will be fun to find new recipes to bake! And, hopefully, I can make them more healthy than those we throw in the microwave! Definitely better than breaded fishsticks I used to feed my children! What was I thinking! Convenience, of course!
And now that I'm writing about food - I'm hungry! Ready to head over to Outback for an early dinner - and then spend the evening watching movies. If I can stay awake that is! Getting up at 4:30 AM and physical labor for me when I haven't done it for awhile makes me very, very tired!
Hope you had a blessed day and enjoyed the beautiful weather!

Family time..... my favorite times....
My middle child called me yesterday and invited me out to lunch and shopping with him to buy a gift for his youngest son. Anytime I can spend time with any of the children and grandchildren, I'm usually up to it. I did check with hubby and he was ok with it so off we went. Had a great time over lunch just catching up on things going on in his family, and helping shop for gifts. I love these times of connecting.
My youngest child then calls me yesterday afternoon and wanted to know if I was going to do 'Pat Tillman's Run' with him in April. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can, but it sure would be fun to do the walk with him. If things change, I can still register. Had a good chat with him as well, catching up on things. He is going to be stopping by sometime Saturday afternoon.
And just now, my daughter, my firstborn, calls me and wants us to get together tomorrow for awhile and has scheduled pedicures for herself, my granddaughter and myself. That will be such fun! It will be fun to have a 'girls time' and get pampered, as well as catch up with her and my granddaughter.
Of course Tom and I spend a LOT of time together now that I'm not working. We try to get our 'training walks' in at least three times a week - whether walking the canal or the treadmill. It gives us a lot of one on one time talking - or not talking - while we walk. He even took me to lunch today and went to the grocery store with me!
I love my alone time, but also enjoy being with family. I love it when all the grandchildren are around and even though doing their own thing (usually on the computers), we are all together. It's all good. I always say my grandchildren keep me young. It was my children who gave me my gray hairs!
What about you? Do you treasure the time you get to spend with family? I know that with busy schedules and hectic times, teenager attitudes and young sibling rivalry causes great conflicts. But, do you stop to listen to the problem, do you take time to hear what is being said? It doesn't mean you have to agree, sometimes they just want to be heard. Take some time one to one with your family members whenever you can. This time is so precious - and before you know it, they are off and gone - too busy or too far away. I wish I had opportunities to spend more time when my children were younger. My issues as well as theirs kept getting in the way. I thank God I have matured enough to realize how important our relationship is.
I don't know about you, but I am grateful that our God always has time for us. Whenever we cry out to Him and call on His Name, He hears us and stops what He is doing to see what it is we need. Isn't that so cool?! Even just sitting in a chair and thinking about Him, brings Him much pleasure. And it brings a smile to my face. He is so good to us.

New Day....New Plan
I had difficulty getting to sleep last night for thinking about my new quiet time plan. I was wakened early to my cell phone going off with a panic text from my little sissy. But, all is well. God is in control. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves.
I went into my quiet time with one thought - to focus upon God alone. I read my Bible, wrote down specific things I did want to pray about, and turned time over to God. It was so good to be able to focus upon Him and not my emotions or attitudes, and verbalize things I really wanted to pray about - and could put the inflection (is that the right word?) in my voice instead of scribbling on paper. It was a good time. I also felt 'unfinished' since I usually spent time writing in my journal. But, "this too shall pass".
I had to smile when I read my daughter's comments to yesterday's post..... she always likes to bring up things that we used when I was growing up that may not be used nowadays. As you read this, my dear daughter, I am thinking of the record player I bought and you bringing the children over so that they could see what it was. Just remember, this is YOUR history too.
I love learning about things my parents did in the past. I'm sentimental. Most of our personal history is gone forever. I remember at my Granny's in Tennessee they had an old pump organ. Oh, how I loved that organ and always played it when we visited! I always said that I wanted it. Unfortunately, many years ago, it was taken to the dump and thrown away, as well as a lot of other antique items. Those that would have given value to them were no longer alive, and those that had them, saw no value in them but as old furniture and things.
Sometimes that is the way we treat God, don't you think? As long as He gives us what we want and does all that we ask, He is of value to us. But, let troubles come and if He doesn't respond as quickly as we think He should, we tend to de-value our relationship with Him. We turn away and seek other answers that will be in line with what we want. If God doesn't give us what we want from Him, then we just don't ask Him anymore. If He takes away from us what we value, then what good is He?
He is greater than the heavens, He is the Creator of all things. He is Life, and Love, and Hope. He is the Past. He is the Future. He is the Present. He is Presence. He is Almighty. He is Faithful. He is...... God.
He doesn't allow things to happen to hurt us. He doesn't take away from us to punish us. He doesn't withhold from us to tease us. He always brings good in every circumstance. Romans 8:28 says it all.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
When I have questioned why things are going the way they are, I know I can trust God to have the circumstances and situations in view. Why? Because He has me in the palm of His hand and He loves me. And He loves you too. Trust Him and know that He is in control of every circumstance in your life - good and bad.
Today is a good day.

Journals and Journaling....
Journaling.... the act of writing a record of happenings. What kind of happenings? Whatever you want it to be.
I have been journaling since the early 1990's, I would guess. I have notebooks, books, well, about anything that I could write in - in boxes, in stacks, in bookcases. My little sissy and I have often joked with each other that if the other should die first, all journals go to the remaining sister for privacy and safety - and to be destroyed. I mentioned this one day to one of my sons and he said that wasn't right - that I should leave them for my children to read. He seemed to be upset that I would not give my children the opportunity to see who I am on the inside.
I have pondered that comment for many months now. One part of me agrees because if anyone started at the beginning of my journals (providing they could be found and put in some sort of order), they would see my life in its different stages. Stages of pain, struggles, tears, happiness, sorrow, joy, hopelessness, sadness, worship, interaction, anger, hurt, hunger, confession, intercession, more confession, doubts, pleading, more confession, confusion, ... well, I guess about all the emotions one can go through in a lifetime. But the question is still there... do I want anyone to read some of the things I wrote? These are my personal and private thoughts of whatever I was going through at that time. I call out the acts of people and name them. Do these people want to read their names in my journals and be glad I thought so highly or them - or take a chance that I wrote about something they did that was so wrong - in my perception? Do they really want to know the depth of my pain at their action(s) and behavior? Or that what they did brought me joy? Does anyone really care? More importantly, should they care?
I think I have decided what to do. My thinking is always subject to change, of course. I have pulled together a stack of 15 or so journals - not sure what time frame they cover as it depends on how many pages I fill up on a daily basis and when I wrote them. As I gather up other journals scattered here and there, here is what I plan to do. I believe that I will compromise with my son's request. Somewhat.
I believe that I will take on the task of reading my journals myself. If a day shares something I would rather my children not know (like taking someone to 'task' in my note), I will shred it. If the day is something that tells something about me personally, what I am feeling, thinking, etc., I will type it up by date and begin a folder titled "Journals" and save it on my computer. Then shred the notes. I can also put them in some type of order so that my 'growth' in life can be seen. When God takes me home, my life will be there for all to read.
When I began to journal, it was supposed to be what God was sharing with me that day from my reading of scripture. Over the years it has developed more into my time of whining, griping, complaining, crying, seeking, worshiping, praying, and seeking God. Over the past few years, I have realized that I more often write out my prayers daily, rather than taking the time to verbally express them to God and then wait upon His answer. Although I very much enjoy writing in my journals and writing to God or expressing what I'm feeling, I miss that closeness I always felt just by sitting in His Presence and waiting, verbalizing my heart to Him. He has reminded me of this several times these past few months. I think He misses my undivided attention and talks with Him too.
I still believe in keeping a journal, for specific prayer requests, so that I can see when and how God answers my prayers. Sometimes when I pray about something and don't write it down (at least for me), when I hear of an answer to prayer, I wonder if I prayed about it ... or did someone else. Not that someone else praying matters, but what if they didn't?
God has answered so many of my prayers, so many of my cries for His mercy, His grace. I am sure I have written down many in my journals - and who knows, they may just be material for this blog! I love to share how God moves in my life, moves in answer to prayers (mine and others). I don't want to write down a prayer and forget about it (unless God continuously lays it on my heart - which He does at times). Sometimes verbalizing a request causes it to 'stick' with me. I want to pray and know that He will answer and watch for the answer. I may see the answer - and I may not. All answers are in His timing and in how He desires to answer them. But I like to watch to see what He is going to do.
So, with the above thoughts, starting tomorrow (cause God and I have already had our time together first thing this morning), I'm going to change my quiet time activities. My journal won't be for my daily items of requests and comments and prayers, but for specific requests and things that God shows me.
Blessings!

Valentine's Day..... my Treasure Box....
I have a Treasure Box. On February 14, 2007, my hubby gave me a Treasure Box. Inside the beautiful Treasure box was two sheets of paper. One paper told me what the box was for.
"This is your Treasure Box. In this box you can keep only those things that give you good and loving memories of events and times in our marriage over the remaining years of our lives together. I had thought a lot about what could I give you that would be special from me just for you. Something that would be lasting, something that if I pass before you, you could leave it in your will to the grandchildren. It would be their treasure of loving memories of you and I. This Treasure Box not only contains this letter but also my deepest love and my heart. I love you so very deeply and I know that I have a special gift that God has given to me. Love, Tom"
The second sheet of paper contained a list of Blessings. No, I'm not going to write them all down. These are personal blessings of Tom's love for me.
When was the last time you blessed someone? Will your spouse remember being blessed by you? What about your children? I remember reading The Blessing by Gary Smalley years ago, and was saddened to realize that I never received a blessing from my parents. I wasn't told they were proud of me, nor did I feel encouraged. I take that back... one time my mother told me she was proud of me for becoming involved in the church association in Arizona. That was it. I never felt I received the Blessing that parents are to pass on to their children.
I want to live my life as a Blessing, an encouragement, to others. I want my husband, children, and grandchildren to know that I love them, that I encourage them, that I bless them. I want to bless my siblings, that they know they are loved and valued. I believe the Gaithers had a song titled "I Want to be a Blessing". I remember my mama saying often when we'd talk.... "I just want to be a blessing". We would laugh and continue our conversation.
It should be Valentine's day every day. We love because He first loved us. Doesn't that make each day a day of love?
Remember your loved ones today... write them a note of blessings. It will be something they can put in their 'treasure box'. Michael's or JoAnn Fabrics have beautiful cardboard boxes that can be used as a treasure box. Just saying. Where would you put something that you treasure?
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Blessings!

1 Corinthians 13 - The Greatest Gift
13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

Weekend thoughts.... and being a light in your world...
Another weekend has flown by and here it is Monday again. Hubby has gone to an early morning meeting and I am waiting on him to get back so that we can get our walk in today. I also, finally, received a call Friday to go to the school district today or tomorrow and get fingerprinted so that I can read to the children at two schools I applied for. I am excited and plan to do that today as well. I love children and love being a part of their lives. Granted, reading for a short time with them doesn't make me necessarily a part of their lives, and yet, I am. When my daughter was a teacher, she asked me to read for her 2nd grade class. I remember still the book - James and the Giant Peach. LOL It was an 'interesting' book - let's leave it at that.
Whitney Houston died over the weekend. I remember her in 'The Preacher's Wife' - and loved her singing in it. It has been reported that she was doing drugs every day that she worked on this film, and that breaks my heart. I have often wondered how people can be in Christian films, can portray being a Christian, can even portray Christ - and not be affected. But, isn't it how some Christians act daily? They get up and dress up and go to church on Sunday and become the pious Christian.... and then go home and yell at each other and beat the dog. Well, ok, maybe they don't beat the dog, but how many barely get out of the parking lot of the church when they are complaining or yelling about something. Yeah, not a question. Sometimes they aren't affected either.
We are called to be 'light' in this world. I admit, I fail greatly sometimes in this area. Sometimes I let my indifference, my emotions, or my attitudes, darken the area around me. Sometimes I just withdraw. But we are to be a shining light in the darkness of this world. We are not to be 'of this world'. I'm reading a book - which I will share more about at another time - but the chapter I read this morning made sense, and it is on this very subject. Being a 'light'. It is so easy for each of us to continue to be 'us'. Oh yes, the 'Christian us'. We do good when we feel like it. We probably don't look for ways to do good, but when we pay attention, and see it, we do good. We may pick up that paper that someone dropped and hand it to them. We may let someone go ahead of us into that parking spot that we had planned to turn into. Or not get angry when someone cuts in front of us or does something stupid while driving. We may even allow someone to step in front of us without resentment at a restaurant or a movie theater. Or hand a few dollars to someone who is standing by the roadside. Or let someone complete their thought before butting in with our opinion. Or even volunteering to do something we actually, really, enjoy doing.
But, what about all the other times? Is the way we are living in our homes, and outside our homes, portraying us as a 'light' to our family, and to the rest of the world? I love it that a man I know has taken to washing the dishes for his family. All on his own, he decided to do it. An act of kindness. A 'light' to his wife, for sure.
A pastor friend once shared about paying for an extra cup of coffee at Starbucks for the next person in line. The next in line had no idea their drink was paid for. They didn't know who paid for it. So in return, they paid for the next person and it went 4-6 people back before someone just said 'thanks' and let it stop. Another friend shared how she was in the drive-up line at McDonalds (I think it was) and paid for whatever was ordered in the car behind her. And, if I recall correctly, the story continued for at least another car. A 'light' in the darkness. A touch of kindness.
So what are we doing to be a 'light' in this world? In our home? Some thoughts....
* Do kind things anonymously. It isn't about you, but you will find joy in the doing.
* Write that note you keep putting off writing. Yeah, handwritten. Put in an envelope and mailed with a stamp. Snail mail. It may arrive on just the day that person needs a lift.
* Cook extra for dinner and invite someone over - or take the meal to them.
* Read a book and share it with someone who would enjoy it. Then plan to discuss it with them.
* Connect with a friend over coke or coffee and find out what is going on with them.
* Be observant - is someone sitting alone at a restaurant? They could possibly want someone to just talk with them. Ask to join them. If they say no, that's fine. But if they say yes, it could change your world - and theirs. Listen.
* Do something special without expecting any reward.
* Be a friend to someone. (Some people are hard to like, let alone love. They may think it is you.)
* Wash the dishes. Clean the toilet. Do the 'unfun' part of cleaning. Your spouse will love you for it.
It is the little things we do that make the biggest difference. It doesn't have to be monetary. It doesn't have to take a lot of time. It doesn't have to take a lot of effort. It is just a 'little thing' that means a lot to the person it is done for.
Just for the record, my husband does the dishes for us at every meal. Ok, 99% of the time. He also does most of the cleaning, including the laundry. Sometimes he will even go out and purchase on his own things to fix for dinner - and fix it himself. Acts of kindness.
Be a light in your home, in your world. Step out of your comfort zone and share who Christ is IN you, that He isn't just someone you talk about. Be real to those around you. Live the Light you say is Christ living in you.

Friends....
I met up with a couple girlfriends this morning for our 'monthly walk' and Einstein bagel sandwiches and coffee for breakfast. These girlfriends are true friends - they love me in spite of me. And I love them. We share our ups and downs, our walk with God, our jobs (or lack thereof!), and our families. It is such a joy to meet with them and share our lives together. We laugh together, and we cry together. Well, maybe not so much crying, but we sure do a lot of laughing. They are a joy to be around.
What about you? Do you have a friend to meet with once in awhile and have a coke or a cup of coffee with and just share life?
Speaking of friends - a friend from high school has a blog and I finally got around to looking at it. I was really impressed at its professionalism. Nothing like my blog here where I just ramble about what ever I feel like. Check it out. http://fitblogr.com . Think I am going to purchase a jump rope! LOL
Hope that you are having a good day - I think we are going to head over to Desert Ridge Marketplace in a bit and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Why don't you call a friend and meet for that coke or coffee - just to catch up. You will be glad you did.
Blessings!

Ramblings..
Preparations are being made for our trip to Indy in May for the mini-marathon. Got our airline tickets the other day - and we are still 'in training. Our longest walk yet is 10.1 miles which we did day before yesterday. Of course we took yesterday 'off' to rest. Our legs were really tired! Today I wasn't sure if we were going to do a short walk or not - but Tom has shared his ankle is hurting at times - so we probably will not walk today. Definitely tomorrow. I may get on the treadmill later - depends. I will be walking Saturday with two of my very best friends too.
It is amazing with all this walking that neither of us are losing any weight. So, I checked out weight watchers the other day - and talked myself out of it. I have so many cook books and I love Biggest Loser and I have all these 'helps' - it's just doing it! We love to eat too much, I guess! But, we do need to get focused on losing weight as well as in training for the mini-marathon. Just not understanding why we don't have the motivation. Sigh...another thing to ponder.
Not much going on today - did a little shopping and Tom tried to get a pell grant to go back to school. He is really disappointed that he didn't get it. Will have to check out some other things.
Had a great class at church last night - still doing James (with Beth Moore). She can really nail you on things, without being in the Bible - and being in the book of James which already makes one wear 'steel-toed shoes' - she is really stepping hard. Or maybe it is just me! In the midst of all my struggles I always run to the book of James to keep my focus and to 'bridle my tongue'. That is so hard! Guess I ought to get started on this week's lesson.
Hope that you are having a good day - I don't have much to share today. Thinking about a lot of things - but none I can share a this time. Thinking about the book my granddaughter thinks I ought to write. Who knows... maybe God will give me more thoughts on that one. I asked Tricia one day how she thought I should begin it.... she goes.... "Once upon a time....."
Blessings!

Treasured Memories...
My "real" father died 55 years ago yesterday. I was seven years old. I don't have many memories of my dad, but the few I have, I hold dear to my heart. He was 39 years old, leaving behind a wife and six children. We lived behind a store, but I'm uncertain which it was. I know my older siblings would know, but I don't remember. Seems like a furniture store but am not sure. The front part of the house was the store, and we lived behind it, I assume separated by a wall. Our place was very small, but sufficient. My dad was sick a lot, complications from diabetes, I believe.
After my dad, Earl James Rigsby, died, my mother had to find employment. She went to work at Nevitt's Market in Indianapolis, IN where my dad had worked the last few years of his life. Now some of my rememberings may be incorrect, but nevertheless, I'm sure the thoughts are close. Dad was also a minister and a worship leader. At that time we attended West Washington Street Church of God. I believe Dad was the worship leader at that time, but he pastored a church he helped build in McMinneville, Tennessee before that.
Mother did not know how to drive so dear friends, Gilbert and Mary Herndon, taught her how to drive dad's car so that she could go to work. Gilbert died years ago, but Mary has remained close to a lot of family. Mary used to babysit for my daughter (and she had babysat me too, I believe!) Mother also didn't make much money working but we got by.
Other close friends of our family, Lindsay and Myrtle Ganote, took us children - at least the three youngest which would be me, Lil' Mike and Anita - Christmas shopping. I remember my first experience in an elevator - I'm sure they took us to L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis. I got a doll and I think a dress. Lindsay and Myrtle blessed us that year for Christmas. I know I have shared this story before.
Myrtle Ganote died many years ago. I remember going to her funeral. It was the first time I had ever seen a funeral that was a happy occasion. Pictures were everywhere of Myrtle laughing, doing things, being with family. It really made an impact on me. There were tears, of course, but I could see that Myrtle LIVED life. Even though she died of cancer, she LIVED.
This morning I hear that Lindsay Ganote has passed away. My heart is saddened for another part of my life is fading away. My prayer for his family is that they will find comfort in knowing others loved and respected their father from memories past. My heart goes out to them as they prepare to lay their father to rest.
When Tom and I went to Hawaii in May 1983, taking Mary and Stuart with us, we met up with Lindsay as he was living in Hawaii. He took us several places around the island, showing us sights most tourists would not see. Treasured memories. I also got to see my friend and his daughter, Anita, who also lived in Hawaii at that time. The family has always held a special place in my heart.
I wonder if I have made an impact on anyone's life that they would hold on to treasured memories when I die. Have I loved someone enough that it made a difference? Have I cared enough to help someone change? Have the words I have spoken, the love I have given, been enough? Will there be a laugh of silly things to share or deep thoughts that could make a difference?
What about you? As you travel this journey of life, what will you be leaving behind in memories for your spouse, your children, your grandchildren, your friends? How will you be remembered?
Once again, I am reminded of the story of 'The Dash' - you know, the dash between the beginning of your life and the end. What will that dash hold for you? Think about it. Do you want to change what is there now? You still have time to make treasured memories. Don't wait. Each day is precious.
Blessings!

Reactions.... stealing joy
Isn't it amazing how the 'little things' can rob you of your joy? I just encountered two 'little things' within a half hour of each other. As I sit here and ponder these things, I tell myself to shrug it off, let it go. And I am sure you do the same. But sometimes, even when you let it go, it still hurts. It is discouraging.
James 2:8
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
WHAT was James thinking when he wrote that?! Count it all joy? Are you kidding me? This morning has left me anything but joyful - and yet, it is my choice on how I am feeling. That I am feeling hurt. And one issue is really over nothing that I could change on my own. I could probably change something on the other, but then I still wouldn't have joy about it, but would stop the remark or comment. Sigh.
I think on James' comment, "consider it all joy"....... surely he wasn't thinking of my everyday life, was he? Isn't it when one is being persecuted for Christ that we should be happy? Isn't that what he meant? It isn't including the things that people say or do, is it?
Yeah it is. When people say things, that have nothing to do with you as a person, how we respond is an example of who Christ is in us. I must admit I was really surprised at what was said at a store - because we are not paid staff of a church, we could no longer receive a discount there, even though we showed proof of our status as ministers and had received the discount many times before. That made no sense to us - the past two churches we have been 'on staff' were unpaid because the church could not afford to pay us anything. So.... according to this store, we are unable to receive a discount on books or items purchased because we are not paid staff. It almost seems unfair. No worries though - we can order online from another distributor and get a discount without even being asked the question. Plus we can get discounts from other like stores.... it just surprised us. Even with their explanation of people abuse it by teaching classes then say they are a pastor so that they can get a discount (which would be a lie, would it not?) - the discount is not great enough to even push on it. Our integrity is worth more than that. We just said we understood, showed proof we were ministers, and stated we felt we should get the discount. We didn't get it, we paid for our purchase, and left. It makes us sad for we desire nothing more than to serve - whether paid or unpaid. I wait upon God's timing if I am to ever get my dream job. If it never happens, then it wasn't His dream for me. And that is ok.
As for the other, I may as well send my resume to the person I keep getting asked about and then trust God to start the ball rolling if I am to work there. I just don't feel that is where I am to be, so have been hesitant to do so. I guess another way to look at it, is that God will surely prevent me from going there if He doesn't want me there. In my heart I have dreamed of where I would love to be. Will it ever happen? I have no idea. God knows my heart and my desire. I leave it there. I even have my 'office' set up - complete with my books I'm trying to figure out what to do with here at home!
Consider it all joy? Oh, I guess I need to read the next part of the scripture.... 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
The testing of our faith produces patience. As we withhold comments we really want to make, (because when we are hurt, we want to respond in hurt), we find that we experience more patience, and more peace. It may take a little while for the hurt to fade away, but it does go away. Unfairness, comments - these are things that can be considered 'various trials' - but we can consider them all joy, for our response is a result of putting Christ first in our lives. We aren't perfect, and I'm not saying we will always respond this way, but our prayer is that our words will always be Christ-like. And in Him, we can consider our trials 'all joy'.
If your 'steal joy' is lack of employment and the desire to find another position, I pray that you look to this time of searching for employment as a time of also drawing near to God. Seek Him, seek what He has for you. Trust Him. I know I am. Volunteer as your time permits in the meantime. You will feel rewarded to give back while you can. Be a blessing to others.
May every trial you encounter today be considered all joy.
Blessings!
Today's message.... Chasing Family/Messy Family
Wow. Today's message at church was outstanding! How many of us would be honest enough to even admit we have 'messy familes'? I will be honest with you.... I came from a 'messy family' and unfortunately, had a 'messy family' for years. Our pastor shared today the following.... and yes, I'm going to use the outline in our bulletin. This is too good to not share, with the hopes of someone reading this could benefit from it.
Today's Big Idea: Moving beyond the mess to recapture God's original plan for family.
Look at your family - is it what God intended for your family to be? Are you in need of forgiveness, or need to give forgiveness to someone? Are you so stuck on yourself that you will not admit you could be wrong? Is your family messy?
Family Principle: All families are messy.
Even Jesus didn't come from a perfect line of perfect families. Check out His genealogy in Matthew 1:1-17.
Family Principle: God wants and needs family.
Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us..." Genesis 1:26 NLT
Then God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it." Genesis 1:28 NLT
Family Principle: You and I need real family to bring us freedom.
Father to the fatherless, defender of widows - this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. Psalm 68:5-6 NLT
God places the lonely in families.... so that we can be family. Families do things together. It is more than just spending a little time with the spouse and children; it is giving them your quality time, not just quantity of time. It is caring for each other; giving up your rights to help them with theirs. It is opening your heart to your spouse and your children (and grandchildren!) and letting them in to share life with you. It isn't about you doing your own thing.
Family Principle: God's plan for the family includes it enhancing the lives of others.
All the families on earth will be blessed through you. Genesis 12:3 NLT
Is what you are doing in your life affecting your spouse and your children? Are you trying to ignore the pain you have caused them? Trust me, at some point, you will see and know what your behavior and attitude has done. I carry 'regret' with me for things I allowed and did not change in my past. How I wish I knew the Lord and knew how to live for Him then! I often pray that God would erase those painful years from my mind and from my children's minds. I want them to learn from my mistakes, and not do them. I want my blessings for my children to far outweigh any grief and pain I have caused them. I want to make a positive difference in my children and grandchildren's lives.
I believe that you also want the best for your children and grandchildren. Is what you are doing now a blessing to your spouse and to your children? Is it something that you hope they will carry on in their families?
Family Principle: We can change family from a place of hurt to a place of refuge.
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord; He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him... If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. Psalm 91:1-2, 9-10 NLT
So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you....Don't lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and its wicked deeds. Put on a new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. Colossians 3:5, 9-10 NLT
Our family should be a place where we can be loved and comforted unconditionally. Our home should be open and warm for those that need to know they are loved as a person. So many times we play the game of pretend. You know that game - where 'things are not always what they seem'.... oh wait, isn't that a movie line? We play the 'pretend all is well' game often, don't we? Heaven forbid someone should think our family was not perfect.
We need to put aside those pretend games and truly live the Christian life and not pretend it is our life when it is not. Too many people get hurt when that game is played. Spouses are hurt; children are hurt; and for oneself, playing a game of pretend is a big lie. And those closest to you know the truth, you are not fooling anyone by your game.
How do you change? How do you help your 'messy family'?
Step One: Address the mess. You may not be able to change where it came from but you can deal with it now. You need to remember you can not change anyone but yourself. Start with the mess in you. Then, you will see changes in others as they respond to your change.
Step Two: Start cutting. Stop doing what you have been doing that hasn't been working! Quit contributing to the messy family - cut out that stuff that hurts and alienates your spouse and loved ones. If sarcastic remarks aren't making everyone want to be with you, maybe it is something you need to cut out! Quit playing games!
Step Three: Begin something new. Put on a new nature. Change your attitude; change how you respond to family issues. Before you scream and yell about things that have gone wrong, take time to evaluate what the real issue is. Then calmly and quietly share your thoughts or feelings.
My apology to Pastor Jim Davey for inserting my thoughts into his message for today - to hear the real message, please go to www.nhcog.org and click on where you can hear the message. The series is Chasing Family, the title is Messy Family.

The Circle Maker - a review of sorts
Yes, this is a plug for Mark Batterson's new book The Circle Maker. And, yes, I have mentioned the book a few times recently as well. This book has inspired me and encouraged me in ways I can not share. Why? Because they touch something deep inside of me.
I have been a 'pray-er' for many, many years. An intercessor. A woman who sought God before all other things. I love my 'quiet time' each day with my Lord. I seek those times - and create those times - in which I can withdraw from the world to have extended time with God - whether it is in another location or hiding out in one of the rooms for most of the day without distractions. I live for those moments when I am enmeshed in worship and in His Presence. There is nothing like it.
Mark Batterson's book has taken me to a new level. Besides claiming the promises of God in the Bible, and praying the promises of God as He gives them, Mark has us circling the promises and the things we bring before God, and wait upon Him to bring them (providing they are in His will, of course!) to fruition.
When I first started reading the book, several things popped into my mind that I started mentally circling. Salvation for my children and grandchildren; job situations; health issues; church; financial issues; and many others. In fact, I did take a notebook and wrote down more specifically those things and circled them.
One huge thing that came to me with such a longing in my heart - was walking circles around some churches that are dear to my heart. Oh that God would hear my prayers for His churches and will bring exactly what they need! I visualized myself walking around these churches and praying blessings upon them. I truly believe that God will bless them, not just because of my prayers for there are many, many others that pray for the church, but because we pray. Although I have not physically walked circles around the churches, in my heart and in my mind I have walked numerous circles around the buildings and I can not wait to see what God is going to do!
One church, before the sanctuary was built, I was part of the prayer walk around the property. I wrote scriptures and prayers upon the stage as it was being built. Another church I have walked around the property and prayed around and inside the sanctuary. And yet, another church, when it was being built, my prayers and scriptures are inside the walls. I believe that my prayers, along with all the others offered on the church's behalf, are still being answered. All prayers are answered in His timing, not ours.
Circling prayers. I don't want to give the story in the book that started the thought process - but just know that when you call upon the mercy and goodness of God that He will answer. Be persistent in prayer. Don't just pray once. Yes, God may choose to answer after one prayer. After all, when we are in a crisis and call out 'Lord, help me!' we are grateful He does answer immediately. But sometimes, He doesn't. Sometimes we need to keep praying, keep circling, keep being persistent in prayer.
Kind of like the widow in Luke 18 who was persistent before the judge, wanting justice from her adversary. We also need to be persistent in our prayers. If the prayers are not what we are to be praying, He will show you how you need to pray. Sometimes we really do not want what we pray for!
What is a prayer concern for you? Is there a desperate need that you need answered? Perhaps you are looking for a job, or have financial concerns. Perhaps you have health issues that you want prayer for. Perhaps you want the peace that comes from knowing Jesus as Lord. Whatever it is, if you want to leave a message, I would be honored to intercede in your behalf. Or perhaps you would like to write your prayer out, circle it, and cry out to the Lord for His favor. Whatever you choose, know that our God delights in hearing us, and answering. Trust Him in all things, in all times.
Blessings!

Strange dream.... what does it mean?
Wow, I really had a strange dream last night! I still haven't figured out where 'it' came from! For you to get the full picture, please be patient as I give you details. The house I am living in is old. It is the house I lived in that was built in 1896 and the location is in a small town in Indiana. It is two story, with a coal stove in the downstairs front room, a gas stove in the downstairs bedroom. We live in the downstairs area because with no insulation in the house, it can get quite chilly. And those that know me well, know that I am always cold.
For some reason I head up the stairs of this house, to find two people living upstairs! A man and a woman. I am startled, for it is our house, and we didn't know anyone was living upstairs. I call for Tom to come up (which is interesting as this house was one I lived in with my first husband before we tore it down) to identify who these people were. He didn't know either. I go back and forth from being afraid - finding people in my house that I don't know who they are or how they got there and they aren't talking - and being angry they were there!
In my heart and mind I keep hearing that God wants me to take care of them, that is what He is calling each of us to do. But in my fear of the finding, I am furious they are in my house without my knowledge. So I am arguing with myself - and I wake up. So I lay there and ponder. Ok, Lord, is this a stupid dream caused by eating fish and chips at Red Lobster with friends last night or are you trying to tell me something?
So, I do not know what caused the dream, nor why the setting was the old house, why people were living in the upstairs, why was I afraid, and why was I upset they were there. Don't plan to ponder much more on it - if God is wanting to show me something in it, He will reveal it to me in His time. For now, it was just a dream.
Hope you are having a good day!
Blessings!

So are we 'IN' or 'OUT'?
My little sister has been wavering on the mini-marathon we are to complete with our brother, and our spouses, in May. I know she still has a 'cantaloupe' on her hip from a very bad fall last November. The hematoma was to have 'disappeared' several weeks ago - but it is still there and according to my sissy, it has not gone down. Really creates problems trying to find something to wear as regular pants are difficult to pull on over the 'cantaloupe'. When she walks for any distance, she has to wrap an ace bandage around her leg to give support to this huge bump on her leg. Without it, she says, the pain is great due to the gravity pull just from walking. So she is wavering. She has struggled to increase her walking to get up to speed. We are down to 92 days until the mini-marathon, and she feels she has a long way to go to get to where she should be.
Yesterday Tom and I walked 9.1 miles. After I sent our 'stats' to my sissy and brother, we get an email from my sissy that she can't do it and she is backing out. She wanted to 'quit'. She didn't want to do it and didn't want to put forth the effort to even train. Well, not in those exact words, but it was implied. In spite of my begging her to just keep trying, to keep pushing herself, she said she was 'done'.
Until she got the email from our brother. His email stated that if she - or I - quit, then he would quit as well. He would not continue to train for the mini-marathon (and he is way ahead of us in mileage) if either of us pulled out. I hope she truly took that as encouragement - for she wrote us both back and said that she would continue to try. That is all we are asking. Don't give up. Don't quit on yourself. Just try, each day going a little farther. Training is hard work. It isn't a 'piece of cake'. When you set a goal for yourself, no matter what it is, working towards that goal is hard. One must have the determination to reach that goal, no matter what it is.
So many things come into play when you set a goal - whether it is losing weight, finding a job, climbing a mountain, or completing a marathon. One finds distractions all around them. Sometimes it is being overwhelmed by the journey ahead; break it down into do-able goals to reach it. For example - for a marathon (or a mini-marathon), start with walking 1/2 mile - then build it up. I never dreamed we would already be walking 9 miles in one month of training! But we did it. Determination. Goal setting. Lots of prayer.
Losing weight is usually one pound at a time. If you need to lose a lot, it may seem overwhelming to even start. But the key is - Start. Set a small goal. Then another. Choose wisely what you eat, how you exercise. Watch the weight fall off.
Finding a job sometimes is even harder. I've started looking for a job, and I want to be selective for I want this to be a 'fun' job. I love people and I love to help - I want to be able to encourage and help others. I have mailed out a few resumes, and I will send out a few more. I become frustrated and discouraged when other people want to be sure I see a certain ad or ask if I have sent a resume somewhere. I need to do this on my own.... I don't want to take a job just because someone thinks I need to do it NOW. I want to take a job that I will be at for several years. The last job I had before I took early retirement I stayed nearly 26 years. I'm not one to jump around jobs as many people do. I am a loyal employee. I plan to work for awhile. I want to stay put. I want to make a difference. And I am trusting in God that He will provide the job He wants me to have. I don't want to lose an opportunity for my dream job because I am being pressured to take just a job. I believe that God will direct my path and open doors of opportunity - and will close doors to me that He doesn't want me to go through. Sometimes He just wants us to wait and trust. I'm still reading Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. I want to read it again. So many positive affirmations of who God is and how in trusting Him, things will work for our good. I believe that my God is working for my good.
Whether you are pursuing a goal of job-hunting, losing weight, running or walking a marathon, know that when you put the 'thing' in God's hands, He will orchestrate everything to come together. Just realize that it will be in His timing, not yours. We won't understand all the details, all the reasons things work out like they do. We won't know why doors are shut when we were so sure they were opened. We won't understand when financially things are so difficult when we surrender our checkbook to Him and it doesn't change anything. We get confused when we think our body should respond to good food and exercise but instead it doesn't seem to change.
But one thing I know, in all of this, our God is faithful and His faithfulness and mercy is new every morning. In the good times, praise Him. In the tough times, praise Him. Wait upon the Lord. You will be glad you did.
Blessings!

Blessings!

It just made me laugh!
Have you ever read something that unexpectedly caused you to laugh? I did, this morning. I love it when I read facebook and either my son or daughter-in-law will post what we call, a 'Davidism' or a 'Nathanism' type comment. This morning it was a Davidism.
Ralphie: David, I asked mom if I could be on the computer first.
David: No, I asked first!
Mom: No, David, Ralphie did ask first.
David: No. It was me. I just sounded like Ralphie, 'cuz I had spit caught in my throat!
I don't know what I expected the 'punch line' to be, but reading this one caused me to spit on my computer monitor! It cracked me up!
Did something happen that made you smile this morning? Or were you too engrossed in your own issues that you missed 'life' happening?
Take some time, sit back, and just think through your day - did something happen that you didn't give your attention to - something that would have perhaps brought a smile to your face? Do you need to acknowledge it?
Life is way too short to allow the busyness of the day to take away the joy of living it. Sure, there are some tough times, and if you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know I have had those times too. But I long for the days that bring joy, and smiles, and even laughter that causes one to spit on their computer screen! It is all a part of life.
If you can't think of anything that has made you smile today, why don't you do something to bring a smile to someone? It could be something as simple as washing the dishes, or picking a small flower out of the yard and handing it to someone. Perhaps a note to just say, "I care". Those are treasured things.
Blessings!
