Finding Joy

I got to preach today at church.  It has been awhile since I have had the opportunity to preach anywhere.  I know that is what God has called me to - well, at least speak His Word.  The opportunities have just not been there, but our pastor was still on vacation this morning so I was asked to speak.   I spoke today on the difference between happiness and joy.

Happiness is when you go to Disneyland and have a great time.  You are happy.  But, when you leave, the happiness leaves too.  Joy is different.  Joy is not dependent upon the people in your life or the possessions you accumulate, or what's happening at this point in your life.  If you are going to learn to be joyful, you must learn to be joyful in the situation, in the very problems and experiences of life.

It is interesting how this very sermon got played out with Tom and I this morning.  He wanted to wear one of his Hawaiian shirts to church.  That was fine, but the one he chose really needed to be ironed.  As he walked away, he mumbled under his breath something about the shirt will never get ironed.  Now, I had a choice to make.  I could respond back about my busy schedule with just work alone, not counting other things that I do.  Or I could remain silent.  I chose to remain silent.   Then, he was wanting to get to church early this morning - and I wasn't ready.  He very kindly asked if I was going to be ready to go when he was.  I didn't think I could be without rushing, so I just suggested he drive, and when I was ready, I would drive as well.  It worked out perfectly for it took me at least another half hour.(can't rush beauty)  Again, I could have rushed to get ready to ride with him, be irritated with him for making me rush, and we would have probably snap at each other all the way to church.  (is that what happens at your house?)

But God had been working on me while preparing this sermon.  And, you know what, it was a nice peaceful morning and I arrived at church in plenty of time, unhurried, calm and ready to share God's Word.   What a difference it makes when I listen to God.

What about you?  Did  you have joy this morning - or were you rushing about trying to get somewhere on time, arriving irritated and grumpy.  Do you wish you could rewind today and start over, letting go of the things that really don't matter?

Make a decision today.  Do you want to sweat the small stuff and be joyless - or let the small stuff slide by and retain your joy?  Think about it.

Blessings!
