but I was overwhelmed with the news. It started out as a busy morning yesterday - had lots of meetings to schedule and even a couple to attend. Early afternoon I attended a quick meeting with one boss who wanted to update his direct reports on the news of us losing a contract with the State. Then I was grateful I had turned off my microphone on Teams. He shared that one of our co-workers had passed away over the weekend. I gasped and blurted out something, not even sure what. Grateful they didn't hear my shocked response. Tears came, for I knew this person, not well, but I knew them and had a good work relationship with them.
Let me back up to the first part of November. I had gotten the news that this co-worker's wife had passed away unexpectedly. My heart hurt for him and I got a sympathy card and wrote a short note in it and mailed it. And now, here it is, a short time later, and he has unexpectedly passed away. I hurt for his family. But what took me over the top yesterday was when I got the mail. I opened this one envelope to find a thank you note inside.... from this co-worker - in which he had written, "Thank you for your kind words to me and my family." I bawled. Not because I knew him well, but because of the pain his family must be feeling to lose both parents just before the holidays - holidays that are to bring joy and happiness and gatherings.... only to feel the pain of loss. It broke my heart. And thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes.
But it could happen at any time for any of us. My big brother died on Christmas Eve back in 2002. It was unexpected. It could happen to me, to hubby, or even to you - unexpectedly. But the question comes to me of 'are we ready?' Are you and I ready to come to the end of our life and face God? We don't have all the time in the world - and as we age - it gets less and less. What kind of legacy are we leaving our children, our grandchildren? It's kind of scary because of my ramblings in here, but I guess I'm leaving my 'writings'. Will one of the grandchildren or great grandchildren read it one day? What will they think of me? Will it be thoughts of good or thoughts of 'whatever'? Hearing of someone's death close to you has a way of causing one to think about the 'what if'.
But the what if also includes the 'will I make a difference' thoughts. Will people be glad I'm gone or will they mourn for me for a day or so. I truly do not want people to treat me as a god and mourn forever. Seriously. You get one day. That's it. Then get on with your life. Yes, when thoughts come to your mind of me, I will want to be missed, but then get on with your life. I miss my mother. I miss my oldest and youngest brothers, and I especially miss my big sister. Since she was the last one to pass, I think of her often still. My heart grieves she isn't still here. I miss her. But life goes on. I want to believe that our talks about Jesus and was she ready to meet him - made a difference. She always said she was ready. I wish I had pushed a little harder to make sure. We must always be alert to the wiles of the devil who tries to make us believe that we are ready, when we may have allowed something in our lives that shouldn't be there.
John 10:7-10 (NKJV): "Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. "
I don't know about you, but life is so much better with Jesus than it is without Him. I think back when I chose to not follow Jesus, and I see a lot of pain, a lot of self-destruction, a lot of grief. Not that I am perfect by any means - I still fall off track at times. You know that if you have read this blog for any length of time. But when I feel the most alone, and know that Jesus isn't near, I know that I need to run back to Him as fast as I can and give up whatever it is that pulled me away from him. It may be anger, it may be just life and the way it rolls. But we are called to rise about those things and be an example to others of the goodness of God.
Jesus loved you and me so much He went to the cross for us. He took all our sins - known and unknown, and they were nailed to the cross with Him. He loves us so much that He came back to life again 3 days later so that we could have an eternal home, eternal life, with Him forever. Satan has been defeated. Jesus wins. And so do you, when you give your life to Jesus. Will you take that step today, if you haven't already? Will you let Him walk with you throughout the rest of your life and teach you His ways? His ways are so much better than what the world has to offer.
He is our Fulfillment. Open the door to Jesus, and let Him come in.
Blessings!
