I shall not want...

What do those words make you think about?  Most people will automatically think of the 23rd Psalm.  Is that what you thought of?  I shall not want.  What do you think that means?  Obviously, our first thought is that it means that we have everything that we need, so there is nothing we want, correct?  Ponder that for awhile.  Are you in that place where you can say "I shall not want"?

What made me think of that?  As I sit here and start to write today, I'm listening to Free Chapel's worship service on my phone.  I love worship, and when there is a good worship team that can take you to the Throne of God, I'm so blessed.

Oh my goodness!  Now they are singing an old favorite song of mine - reminds me of my mama.  And it's the only song I can play on the piano.  "When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!  When we all get to heaven, and see Jesus, then we will sing and shout the victory!"  Do you remember that song?  My mama used to sing that all the time, along with 'Rock of Ages'.  Sweet, sweet memories.  Although I don't really have room for it, and although I really can't play, I often toy with the idea of getting a small keyboard that I can sit up back here and whenever I want to remind myself of my heritage of church songs and play them - even with just my right hand, and remind myself of songs my parents used to sing, songs that formed me in my youth.   Whenever I commented to hubby in the past I wanted one, I got the 'what for? where would you put it?' stuff and it doesn't matter, does it?  If I want it, and it means something to me, does it matter what for and where would I put it?  Granted, I wouldn't have opportunity to use it often.... .. I do have an Amazon gift card from my boss... I COULD use it to put towards it, right?

I think that is some of the biggest struggles I have.... I love the things from my childhood that I hold dear.  It's hard to explain.  Some things need to be left in the past; I agree.  But, even if they are never used, if it means something to me... ah... I can't explain it.  Perhaps I'm just missing my mama this morning with hearing these 'old time' songs.  When she was in the hospital, and I got to spend time alone with her, we often sung a hymn.... I didn't remember all the words, but mama did.  'The Old Rugged Cross'.  'It is no Secret, what God can do'.  When We All Get to Heaven'.  Those are songs from my childhood that helped shape my life.  I love the chorus' we now sing, don't get me wrong.  But when the worship team keeps singing the same chorus over and over... my worship shuts down.  It has become a performance instead of worship.  That is my complaint against some of these worship teams.

In fact, when Pastor Gerald, whom I credit with teaching me how to come into God's Presence in worship, he knew when to stop.  We generally would sing 3 songs (and not always a hymn, but sometimes), two would be upbeat and fast and full of praise and worship.  But the third song... that is the one that always did it for me.  It would slow down, and a hush of reverence would fall, as we bowed down and worshiped God.  It prepared our hearts for listening to God's Word that was going to be spoken to us.  I miss those times of worship.

Today is Sunday and I will be stopping soon to jump in the shower and get ready for church.  My throat feels raspy this morning (and has the past three days, actually) and I had a sinus headache again (took a pill and it helped)... thinking about going to an ENT to check out what is going on... only because of what I went through last April at the hotel... I haven't felt well since then.  I had planned to discuss this with my doctor at my well checkup - but you know how that ended up.  Haven't found a new doctor yet, but I'm going to research it soon.  I think I can go to an ENT without a prescription.  Will try, anyway, I think.

I look at my phone and I see that I had a call from my younger son early this morning,   No message was left so I am left to wonder if my granddaughter is at the hospital to deliver our great-grandson.  It is late enough I think I can text him and see if everything is ok.  I never get calls in the middle of the night unless it is important.  I didn't hear it ring, or I would have answered it.  My phone is always in this room at night and I see the volume isn't up very high - I do that so it doesn't scare me awake if it rings.  My watch didn't vibrate so it didn't wake me up.

I'm going to leave this with you this morning...   lyrics to The Old Rugged Cross..

On a hill far away stood an old rugged crossThe emblem of suffering and shameAnd I love that old cross where the dearest and bestFor a world of lost sinners was slain

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)Till my trophies at last I lay downI will cling to the old rugged crossAnd exchange it some day for a crown
To the old rugged cross I will ever be trueIt's shame and reproach gladly bearThen he'll call me some day to my home far awayWhere his glory forever I'll share
And I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)Till my trophies at last I lay downAnd I will cling to the old rugged crossAnd exchange it some day for a crownI will cling to the old rugged crossAnd exchange it some day for a crown

Did you find your mind humming the tune alone with the words as you read the words?  Did you even stop to read the words?  For some of you, you are old enough to remember this song.  For others, you may have never heard it before.  I suggest you pause, and read it again, and take those words to heart.  For many of us, we are who we are, because of The Old Rugged Cross, and Jesus, who died on it, for you, and for me.  Everything we have is nothing compared to the crown we will have when we see Jesus face to face.

Blessings!

Worship is a verb....

I read in my devotional yesterday about a youth pastor who was struggling.  Youth attendance had dropped from 25 down to 14 and he was beginning to feel he needed to resign and find something else to do, rather than ministry, although that is where his heart was.  He didn't feel he was effective, that the youth just were not responding. So one Sunday evening, a little before the youth would begin to arrive, he went to the sanctuary and sat at the piano and began playing.  He closed his eyes and began singing worship songs to the Lord.  Never opening his eyes, he continued through the songs for nearly 45 minutes.  When he paused, and opened his eyes, he saw several youth standing in the pews and with lifted hands and tears flowing, were worshipping the Lord.  He said he realized that what he needed to teach them was verse by verse the book of Songs of Solomon.  The book of Songs of Solomon is a love story, and it tells of God's love for us, if you read into it.  The youth group grew by leaps and bounds as they studied it.  And it all started with worship.

I find that when I am feeling depression coming on, or when I am angry, or when I am in despair - that if I put on praise and worship music, that the atmosphere around me, and in me, changes.  My anger or frustration or depression dispates and I am at peace.  I find myself singing along, and sometimes I can't even work if a song comes on that touches my soul.  I must stop and just worship.

I usually just ask Alexa "Alexa, play praise and worship", and she does.  But I also have my CD player where I can put on many of the praise and worship cds I have.  And I still have my cassette player around here somewhere.  I'm sitting here thinking of how we started out with vinyl records, to 8 tracks, to cassettesm, to cds, to downloads (which I don't mess with).  And now Alexa can just bring up whatever I want her to play.  Convenient, for sure.  And sometimes, the Holy Spirit will bring a song to mind and you find yourself singing it.  I especially love those times.  But if I don't listen to the songs to know the words, I can't sing them!

Sharing with our friends at lunch the other day I commented about how I love worship.  I can usually sit for a long time and just worship the Lord.  I especially love my time alone with God and I have music playing and can worship Him without distractions.  However, one of my complaints with some churches is that the worship team doesn't stop.  Of course if you say anything, they will tell you, "we let the Holy Spirit tell us when to move on".  And that's great.  But after going through the chorus 20-25 times, I shut down.  My worship comes to a halt and I am done.  And I love worship!  I feel by that time they are not worshipping; they are performing to get a response.  My opinion only, obviously.  Maybe it is just me.  Maybe my gift of worship is waning.  I love to worship.  But I can think too that God is saying "move on!  It's not about you, it's about ME!"

I love how God not only receives m worship, but He also goes above and beyond in answer to my prayers.  Remember my request to Him about the board meeting I was to have on Monday - and it had gotten cancelled?  My boss had not spoken to me about why it was cancelled, or anything about it.  The only note I saw was that it was 'being pushed out' which to me meant find another date before our August scheduled meeting.  Yesterday I was looking to find that hour and a half on all these leaders' calendars... but couldn't find anything until the end of June.  I hadn't sent the invite yet.

Well, I had to stop and and work on some travel arrangements for one boss and then I had to tell him to create a profile at our travel company so that I could be his delegate and .. well, it was almost 4PM so I sent him a text and asked him to call me.  He wasn't answering my instant messages on Teams.  So he calls me and during the course of conversation I asked him why the board meeting had gotten cancelled.  He said "because Chuck (the president) had said to cancel it".  Ok....  then he explained they weren't quite ready to start these board meetings.  I commented about trying to find another date/time and he told me "No, don't reschedule it.  We'll start with the next scheduled one in August if we are going to have them."  Wow.  God not only cancelled THIS one, I don't have to reschedule it.  Yay!  I don't like taking minutes and especially for a group I don't even know!  See how good God is to me?!  Scratch that reschedule off my list!

Today I will be finishing up his travel arrangements for a trip to Colorado next month and whatever other meetings I still have to complete.  This has been a week of scheduling meetings - many of which were sent to me last week.  I think I've done about 30 myself without adding in those I have to work with others on.  It's been a busy week, for sure.  Productive too, in most respects.

Side thought... I thought my son was going to 'give me up' the other day when he was here.  He referred  to things I had written in here, without specifically stating where he got the information from.  I was waiting for hubby to ask me when did I talk to him.  Sigh.  Yes, it is nearly a daily thing - but will just say a 'frequent' ask - "have you talked to or text'd or heard from any of the kids (or grandkids) today?"  Seriously.  And 99% of the time the answer is no.  But if something is said and I haven't told him I've talked to them and what about, I get in trouble.  After all, if I haven't talked to anyone, and they know stuff, how do they know stuff if I said I haven't talked to them?  I just don't think about sharing some things when I do talk with them.  And most times, it isn't anything to share, it is just checking in.  Not that I'm keeping secrets, for if I share it on here it isn't a secret, right?  I just don't want to be told what I can write and what I can't write.

Guess I need to stop and start preparing for my day.  I already have several things I want to get completed.  So I will leave you with this....

Psalm 29:2 (NKJV):  Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness."

Worship... the very act can change the atmosphere of your day.  Worship is action; worship is a verb

Blessings!

Mark 12:30 - Worship

This morning in my quiet time, I read, prayed, and mediated for nearly an hour on what I thought God wanted me to share in my little 5 minute talk this morning at church - only ten minutes before I had to start getting ready - He changed it.  I went from sharing about the woman who went to Simon's house because Jesus was there and shed many tears on Jesus' feet, letting down her hair and wiping His feet, kissing His feet in love and worship - to talking about Mark 12:30 where, when Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment, He replied "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength".  The Shema.

How do we do that?  How do we love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength?  We do it in so many ways.  When we think of Him and thank Him for the beauty around us, for our families, for our health, for our church, for friends, for so many blessings, they are too numerous to even mention.  When we love God, we worship Him.

There are four things I want to share this morning about worship -

1.  Worship is the first purpose of your life.  You were created to worship God.  He gives you everything you need, and many things you want - but He is the One to be worshipped - not what you have.

2.  Anytime you express love to God, you are worshipping.  On your way to work, do you see the sunrise - or on the way home, do you notice the sunset - and tell God how much you love Him and thank Him for drawing your attention to the beauty?  Do you take moments throughout the day to just say 'I love you' to the One who loves you far more than anyone else ever could?  Loving Him is worshipping Him.

3.  God-pleasing worship is from the heart.   Do you go to church and sing the songs just because you know them?  Do you really look at the words and feel they are speaking what you want to say to Him?  When you sing "Here I am to worship, Here I am to bow down, Here I am to say that You're my God".... do you really mean it with all your heart?  God is pleased when we 'own' the words we sing in worship to Him.

4.  Worship is delighting in and enjoying God.  I love the term 'enjoying God'.  I do enjoy Him!  He makes my life worth living when I feel that life has been sucked out of me and my heart is heavy with disappointment and sorrow.   He wants to bring me to the place of letting Him take over - and to do that, I have to let go.   I choose to delight in my God and enjoy Him to the fullest.

Mark 12:30   Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all  your strength.

Worship Him!

Blessings!
